_'The New York Herald repeats its pre- dictions that the McKinley Bill will not be- come law this session.

—A school-boy defined strong drink as “the stuff that causes the most human happiness—by lettin’ it alone.

—Thé London Standard’s Berlin corres- pondent says the African negotiations are at a standstill, and that Germany has resolved to wait for England to meet her half-way. :

—It is now more than 2,000 years since it was first proposed to cut a canal through the Isthmus of Corinth, but the work is at last under way directed by a Polish en- gineer and promises to be completed in 1892. The canal willbe only four miles long, and will obviate the comparatively long voyage around the Peloponnesus. The excavation already reaches from sea to gea and isin some places 225 feet deep. The extreme depth of excavation at the deepest, when completed will be 260 feet.

—Freight is now being forwarded from Cal- cutta to the Pacific Coast via the Canadian Pacific steamers, on through bills of lading. On the last steamer, a large amount of freight arrived from Calcutta for Portland. This is a very important matter to the Pa- cific coast, as it opens up a new route be- tween here and Great Britain for the winter months. If freight can be carried from Calcutta, the whole problem is solved, as on account of the great competition exist- ing between these points, it is carried from the old country to Calcutta for practically nothing—considering the distance.

— The New York Journal. of Commerce remarks that whenever the question of prohibition has recently been submitted to the people in any ot the states it has been voted down by a very large majority. In Rhode Island, where prohibition was in- trenched in the constitution by a large vote (15,113 to 9,250) four years ago, 1t was stricken out last year by a constitutional amendment adopted by 28,549 to 9,953, or 5,468 more votes than the two-thirds necessary toa changein the organic jaw.

In Pennsylvania prcehibition was submitted |

to the popular vote and defeated by nearly 200,006 majority. In Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon, West Virginia, New Hampshire and Massachusetts it has also been submitted directly to the people, who have voted against it.

—The special Panama canal commission has prepared a fresh report on the prospects of the canal, in case it is eom- pleted. In this, the annual cost of main- taining is placed at 5,500,000 francs. The expenses of administration are placed at 1,800,000 francs annually and the cost of trangit is estimated at 41,250,000 francs. This is calculated on an average annual tonnage for that period of .5,100,00@ tons and the proposed rate of chargeis per ton twelve and one half francs. The commis-

sion estimates that after the first four years,

there should be an annual | increase in the tonnage of 250,000 tons, until a maximum tonnage

.of 6,000,000 should be reached. After the canal has been in operation for twelve years, the annual net receipts, all expenses being deducted, are estimated at 67,000,- 000f:ancs. This amc unt wo: il tedistcibuted between the present and future share- holders in accordance with the terms -of a eontract to be concluded between the old «company and the new.

A correspondent from King’s County writes ; ** The horse Glen, advertised in your paper, is, no doubt, one of tke best, if not the best, bred horse for general purposes, that has travelled in this sec- tion for many years, Glen has attracted much attention, and will, no doubt, do much better another season, as this is his first visit.” ;

He picked the lock on the jail door, then cut across the yard, and took leg bail for the west, Mr. Barnard, the jailor, at once followed him with a horse, and overtook and captured him near the trotting park, and a few minutes later had him again on board ‘the brig.” Waite had only two weeks of his term re- maining to serve out,

Receipts of potatoes for past six days, 46,000 bush; previous six days, 51,000. There is now but little domestic old . stock on the market, and the small consignments on hand are closing out at abovt former prices. Chenangoes are closely sold up at 85 to 90 c. Magnums moving off fairly at $2 for choice and $1.75 for fair to good lots. The arrivals of eggs continue quite li- beral and the supply offering is fully equal to the wants of the trade. Prices are fair- ly sustained. The few strictly extra east- ern received sell asa rule at 16c. Nova Scotia and N. B. have to be strictly choice to exceed 144.c. P. EH. A Charge Denied.

Srr,—One of the items of Seturday’s

issue, 31st ult., stated that you were re-:

quested to call, police attention to a new drinking den on St. Peter’s Road, near the Roman Catholic Cemetery. The item in itself would merely have occasioned to me the idea that much was being transacted around me of which J was ignorant; but, coupled with some remarks concerning my my house, that I am informed ‘were uttered by a certain bellicose fanatic of the neigh- borhood, I am convinced that I am the in- nocent victim,of his misguided righteous- ness.

There has never been a glass of intoxi- cating drink sold, in my house—a fact I defy anyone te disprove. Boys and men have been drunken about the fiélds and hedges before I came to live here; yet your

This libel, like the generality of its kind, is insidious. Afraid to state plainly what he knows to be a lie, your informant care- fully abstains from mentioning my name, for Britigh law still protects law abiding citizens from sugh as him. Your infor- mant is, in his’ wn opinion, and perhaps in the opinion of his kind (happily they are few) a very devout christian, a church lead- er, a very angelin embryo. But I fear he is one of that class who make public denun- ciation of rum drinking their religion, and

creed (it is only adopted in public) are the most unchrigtian and degraded of men, En- vious of their neizhbgrs’ success, regarding personsof other religious belief with fanatical hatred, they run the course cf life liked dogs, snapping and snarling at everyone.
