Dr. TALMAGE and family are on their way home, his preaching and lecturing tour having been completed at Dublin. The Doctor is in excellent health. He has lectured and preached ninety-six times during three months in Great Britain.

The repert is wholly un- founded, as nothing to that or any other effect has been received by the telegraph authorities or the steamer’s agents up to the present time.

SMALL Pox near ANnacance.—There is some anxiety felt at Anagance about the prox- imity of small pox to that station. The case of Miss Harper is that referred to. She was employed at the Sussex Shoe Factory, and was a boarder at Mrs. Jenner's. By leaving the place, however, she did not escape the disease, and some fear is eatertained that it may spread. Tho authorities will, it is hoped, do everything possible to prevent that result.——Sé. John Telegraph.
Some English journals have been making calculations of the loss in znoney which will be sustained by the present bad harvest in Great Britain. In one estimate it is stated that the deficiency in the corn crops alone will be £25,000,000 and £28,000,000 if beans, pease and rye are added. Potatoes show a loss according to the same computations, of £15,- 250,009, and hay of £15,000,000. ~
Sitver Mrxe.—D. B. Woodsworth, of Nova Scotia who has just been up in the North- West has lately returned to Ottawa, after a fortunate find of a silver mine said to rival Silver Islet, at Thunder Bay, in richness. He has been offered a large gsum of money for it since his return, but refuses, and proposes to await further developments.— Montreal Star,
By means of the “ Heather Belle” and the Railway, « large number of citizens went to Mount Stewart yesterday. The tea in aid of the Roman Cathelic Church was a great success—a very large number being present and the “‘ spread ” first-class. Games of various kinds were played and the enjoyment of the day was unmarred. The rain did not fall until the outdoor en- tertainm ents were all over.
Tue Halifax Herald says: The very satis- factory increase of sugar importations afford ample evidence that new life -has been given to the trade of Halifax under recent fiscal changes. Every effort should be “made to afford facilities for further improvement. In view of this we are glad to learn that the Managers of the Pictou Colleries are desirous of extending their market for coal to the West Indies and elsewhere, and are pre ed to make liberal arrangements with merchants re- quiring coal, as return cargoes for vessels carrying sugar. It iste be hoped that the
railway authorities will assist in this move- ment, and by reducing freight charges on coal exported, enable Halifax to contend with

Secretary of Public Works, and endorsed ‘**lender for Canal and Lock at St. Anne,” will be received at this office until the arrival of the Eastern and Western mails on FRI- DAY, the 10th DAY OF OCTOBER next for the construction of a Lock and the formation of approaches to it on the landward side of the present lock at St. Anne.
A map of the locality, together with plans and specification of the works to be done, can be seen at this office and at the Resident Engineer’s officé, at St. Anne, on and after SATURDAY, the 27th DAY OF SEPTEM.- BER next, at either of which places printed forms of tender can be obtained.
Contractors are requested to bear in mind that tenders will not be considered unless made strictly in accordance with the printed forms, and, in the ease of firms, except there are attached the actual signatures, the nature of the occupation and residence of-each mem- ber of the same, and further, an accepted bank cheyue for the sum of $2,000 must accompany the tender, which sum shall be forfeited if the party tendering declines entering into contract forthe works at the rates and on the terms stated in the offer submitted,
The eheque thus sent in will be returned to the respective parties whose tenders are not accepted,
For the due fulfilment of the contract satis- factory security wil] be required by the deposit of money to the amount ot jive per cent. on the bulk sum of the contract; of which the sum sent in with tender will be considered a part.
Ninety per cent. only of the progress esti- mates will be paid until the completion of the work. :
To each tender must he attachet the actual signatures of two responsible and solvent per- sons, residents of the Dominion, willing to be- come sureties for the carrying out of these conditions, as well as the due performance of the works embraced in the contract.
