2. Give Evidence At Inquiry Into Death Of RCMP Member

GRAND FALLS. Nfld. (Cpl— Tmi witnesses testified Tuesday at a magisterial inquiry into the death of an RCMP constable shot while ihrestigating a barricaded Chinese restaurant at nearby Bot- woo-d Nov. 7. The bodies of two Chinese Canadians were later found in an upstairs room.

Const. Terry Hoey of Havelock, Ont. was killed by a shotgun blast fired through the door of a bed-sitting room in the upstairs living quarters of a restaurant oc- cupied by James Ling and his son Kenneth.

Police outside were kept at bay for 12 hours by shots from the bedroom window. They fired a few shots and tear gas bombs in return. During the battle a blaze broke out in the building.

Ling and his 21-year-old son were found dead in the same room. The younger man was be- lieved to have died several days ' before the shooting incident.

Const. A. A. Bowan said he and Const. Hoey went to the restau- rant aifter waitress Hersey Can— ning reported Ling had been bar. rricaded in the building four days he refused to let employees en- ter.

ENTRANCE BARRED

All entrances were barred but the two police officers put a ladder up the side of the building and opened a window to the sec- ond floor living quarters. Const. Bowan called to Ling and asked about his son. “Ken gone away," Const. Bowan quoted Ling as say- ing. “Come back tomorrow."

After receiving further orders, the police officers re-entered the building by the same window. Const. Bowan said he tried un- successfully to open the bed‘ sitting room door.

He then toured the downstairs section of the building. As he was climbing the stairs a shot rang out and Const. Hoey cried out: “I’ve been shot."

A charge of 12-lgauge buckshot struck Hoey in the chest. He died soon after.

Miss Canning said the Lings were not getting along well to gather.

She testified James had made arrangements to bring a bride for Kenneth from China. Many letters were written to this elf-feet, including some to the immigra— tion department. The bride~to-be was due two weeks before the shooting incident but never ar- rived, Miss Canning

Tht inquiry will continue today.

ARRANGES ROYAL TOUR

Graham, commissioner for the tour next June of the Queen and Prince Phil, flew to London Tuesday to discuss details. He will meet the Queen Friday to present the tentative Royal Tour program and return to Ottawa Saturday.
