Mr. Farmer. first elected to the legislature in 1959, is the only lawyer in the legislature on the PC side

There are precedents for naming men to cabinet posts who have not contested elections. but veteran political observers could not recall here today that a minister defeated in a general election was ever renamed to the post he had held prior to the balloting, though one man de- feated in a by~e1ection served for nine months in the cabinet following his defeat at the polls.

.Frederic A Large. QC, was taken out of the Royal Canadian Navy in June, 1944, by the late Premier Walter Jones to be- come his Attornequeneral, a position Mr. Large filled until the provincial election of Decem- ber 11, 1947. when the young lawyer was elected in First Queens.

in Mr. Large's case. there was no attempt made to open a seat for him. and no byelec- tion was held during the more- than-three years he sat in the cabinet, although he had no seat in the legislature.

Mr. Lea took over as premier of the province on May 20. 1980, after A. C. Saunders had-gone to the Supreme Court bench. Mr. Campbell was defeated in a byelection in Second Prince on October 21 of the same year, but serVed as Attorney-General —there was no Liberal lawyer in the legislature — until the Lea government was defeated on August 29, 1931.

Mr. Campbell won easily in First Prince in 1931, although the Conservatives won 18 to 12,

Elmsdcrle lady Dies At 85 Years

ALBERTON — The death of! Mrs. Harold Pratt of Elmsdale occurred yesterday in Charlot- tetown. She had been in failing health for some time.

The former Georgie Weeks, daughter of the late Mr. 3 n d Mrs. Stephen Weeks of South Kildare, was 85 years of age. When a young woman she went to the United States and w a s employed as a draper in the dressmaking department of L. P. Hollanders in Boston for a number of years.

Forty-six years ago she was married to Mr. Pratt and they made their home in Boston. The past 25 y e a r s of retirement have been spent in Elmsdale. Mrs. Pratt is survived by her husband; one brother. J 0 ho Weeks of Summerside who is at present in Western Canada: and three sisters, Mrs. Eliza Gam- mell of Summerside. Mrs. Jean Murphy of Sea View and Mrs. azel Cameron of Elmsdale.l
