The Panther Prints January 30, 1996

On January 20 the UCCB Capers came to town to face the Panthers in AUAA basketball action.

The Lady Panthers took to the court in the first game. The first half was up and down between the teams and very close. At halftime the Panthers led 40-37. The second half saw much of the same, as the teams matched each other point for point. In the dying seconds of the game the Capers took the lead, but the Pan- thers scored to tie the game at 73. In the overtime, the teams fought for the lead. In the end, a shot by Rigby with six seconds left gave the Pan- thers an 81-80 win. The top scorers for the Panthers were Sirois (18), Rigby (16), and Saunders (10). The player of game honours went to Sirois for her offensive performance, including four three point shots.

against the Capers. Following the ladies game, the men’s team played the game very close in the first half, exchanging points. At the half the teams were tied at 50. The second half saw much of the same, as each team kept pace with the other. It wasn’t until the last few minutes the Panthers put up a lead. Although the Capers tried, they were unable to come back. The Panthers won 87- 81. Leading scorers for the Panthers were Robinson (31), MacDonald (14), and Newson (12). Player of the game went to MacDonald who had a strong game at the point for the Panthers.

The Rematch On Sunday January 21, the Capers and Panthers met in a re- match, with the Capers teams look- ing to avenge their losses. i first on the

court, and the Panthers soon dis- played that the Capers would have a hard time winning. The first half started off quickly with the Panthers building a lead. The Panthers’ defense in the first stopped the Capers cold. The Panthers forced many turnovers and shots with their strong defense. At half the Panthers led 48-17. In the second half, the Panthers did much of the same. The Capers were unable to mount any sustained offensive presence, and the Panthers went on to a 80-57 victory. Leading the Panthers were Rigby (30), Saunders (13), and Shive (10). Rigby won player of the game.

Next the men took to the court. The first half started off slow, but eventually gained momentum. The Panthers took the early lead, and at half were up 46-34. The second half saw the Panthers add to and defend

their lead. The Capers were unable to gather any momentum, and were defeated by the Panthers by a score of 91-69. Leading scorers for the Panthers were Robinson (25), Newson (15), Peter Lawlor and Moore (11 each).

The Panthers’ next games are January 27 and 28 against SMU and Acadia respectively.

At the half time of the men’s game on Saturday, several UPEI field hockey players were honoured. This year the team made it to the finals for the first time. Players honoured as AUAA all stars were Cheryl McQuillan and Holly Boswell. All Canadian all stars were Anne Mayme (second team, and AUAA all star), and Tracey McGee (first team and AUAA all star). Congratulations on a job well done!
