TIMELY FARM NOTES,

The value of a good bed for stock in winter can hardly be over estimated. Use bedding librally and stock will respond as hiverally as to generous feeding. Ferm stock is generally better off in the open yard with a good bed than in any building with wet, filthy and uncomfortable places for lymg. Among the essentials for good epre of stock bedding should stand first.

Every cow of a dairy herd shou!d be ex- aminéd through a Babcock tester. The milk should be weighed and tested so that the unprofitable cow shonld be known and weeded out of the berd. Fargrers cannot afford to keep cows for dairy purposes which do not yield quantities of butter or cheese pretty well up to standard record. Both laborand feed may be wasted if the cows which give less than average quen- tity of butter fat or casein are not turned over to the butcher.

Agriculture is the parent of arts, not because it was the first, but because ail other arts are its legitimate offepring and cansot exist without it. It is the great business of civilized life and gives em- ployment to a vast majority of almost “ivery people. The substantial, enduring prosperity of the state is always in the ra- uo of its agricultural industry and wealth. Commerce and manufacture may give temporary consequence to a state, but®* up- less backed by a prosperous agricultural population they engender the elements of avarice, followed by speedy decay and mr.

Following the same method for years teaches nothing. In feeding horses dur- ing the wipter use severa) kinds of feed, aad note the vonditiou of the animals. It ig- extravagant to feed expensive grain when cheaper hay and fodder way an- ewer. A great many articles of food do not receive proper consideration. A horse may be kept in excellent condition on cut corn fodder, allowing in connectiou there- with a small proportion of bran. If not in service, horses need no food but hay or fodder, and will come in the spring fully prepared to do their share of work along with the horses that may have received grain largely.

An Idaho sheep raiser sent 1,500 weth- ers to England. Their weight was 116 pounds each, He paid $2 per sheep for shipment, and forty cents for selling. Seven men went with the sheep to care for them. They sold for $7.75 per head, and he made a fair profit. With the use of mutton breeds, he would have had sheep of nearly doub‘e the weight.

The fact that horses are not now being raised in as large vumbers as before isa sure evidence that in a few years they wil! be scarce and high. A great many far- mers woo have given up the raising of horses and sheep wil! soon have an oppor- tunity to regret their action. It is the law of supply and demand that as an article becomes scarce its price increases, and the reaction will seon come.

_—eoo—_————_— THE VENEZUELANS AND THE MONROE DOCTRINE,

(Harper’s Weekly.)

The dispute b:tween Venezuela and Great Britain is likely to continue to be very interesting to the people of the United States. Strong efforts are being made, aud will continue to be made, to involve this country in a contention with Great Brit- ain, but under no circumstances ought the United States to take the ground that the Monroe doctrine is applicable. Great Britain, however, Owes it to this country. and to that sense of justice and fair dealr g which ought to govern a strong power in its relations with a weaker one, to submit this question to arbitration.

Mr. Richard Harding Davis, iv a very interesting article on Venezuela, publi-hed in Harper’s Magazine for December, gives us the Venezuelan idea of the Monroe doctrine. It appears that our neighbors have been misled. Itis the Venezuelan belief that, however a republic may treat a foreign power, the United States is at its beck and call, and is bound,’ under the Monroe doctrine, to sustain it with force of arms. The Venezuelans will find them selves sadly mistaken if they base any action whatever upon this construction of the doctrine. There has long been reason to suspect that the outcries and follies of our own jingoes would create unreason- able hope in the countries that would most naturally be the beneficiaries of an enforcement of the Monroe doctrine. The expectations of the Nicaraguans in their recent contest with England was proof of thie, and now we learn from Mr. Davis that the Venezuelane also believe that the United States will come to their as- sistance in their controversy with England no matter what may be the merits of that controversy. The sooner the Venezuelan mind is disabused of this error, the more judicious will be its fina! treatment of the controversy.

If the owners of the sixty odd sealing schooners which make Victor the head- quarters stick to their resolution which they passed at a meeting Tuesday evening not one of the schooners will leave port until August next vear. The resolution. which was unanimously agreed to, is as follows: “That owing to the poor result of the spring voyages the sealing fleet de fer operations until August 1, 1896.” All the prominent sealers were present, and they state that they will adhere to the resolution. Last epring’s operations were not @ success,

The movement among a eertain group of Paris literateura to obtain the release of scar Wilde finds no sympathy in Lon- don, His recent appearance as a witness in a bankruptcy court made it clear that he had suffered far less severely from his detention than was expected. He was thinner, but quiteas héalthy looking as when he was at large, and he showed no evidence of nervous weakness. Nothing short of absolute imminent danger to his life from further imprisonment would lead to his release, ard it is stated by the offic- ial authority that his health is fair.

The most rapid growth in the ex- ports of Japan is in floor mattings, which now go to the United States and Europe in lots of 100,000 bales at a time.

There is a little village named Mark- nenkirchen in Saxony where every working person—men, women and chil- dren—is engaged in the manufacture of violins.

The Brewers’ Journal states that English syndicates have $91,000,000 in- vested in American breweries, the divi- fiend on which, at 9 per cent. last year Was $8,190,000, and was paid in gold.

It is said that a Japanese syndicate will soon operate a steamship line be- tween Japan and some point on the North Pacific coast. Seattle is making & strong effort to become the American terminus of the line.

A dispatch from Saginaw, Mich., says the demand for men in the lum- ber woods exceeds the supply, and wages range from $16 to $22 a month. Large numbers have been hired for the Georgian Bay district and Upper Mich- igan.

A novelty in advertising is shown in a Scotch church. A congregation could not pay its minister, when a soap firm offered to pay $500 a year for five years on condition that its advertisement be hung up in front of the gallery in the church. The offer was accepted.

A plan to supply London with pure water has been submitted to the Coun- ty Council by which dams will be built to the Welsh mountains at the head waters of the rivers Usk, Wye and Towey, and the water then conveye® across England by an aqueduct, 170 miles long. The supply would be 415,- 900,000 gallons a day, and the estimated cost of the work $194,000,000.

No note of the 50,000 or so Issued by the Bank of England is ever issued again. Each note as it is paid in is tancelled and an account kept of its filing. One of the curiosities of the bank is a £5 note which was paid in after being out 111 years. In the bank album for large notes and other cu- riosities is a £1,000,000 bank note which was once issued for convenfence in a transaction involving a large amount of money.

Cotton manufacturing tn Japan is the growth of the last fifteen years. Not a cotton mill, with one exception, of those now in operation, was in op- eration prior to 1880, says the Indus- trial Record. Not more than about ten years ago the people depended almost wholly upon foreign products of fac- tory made cotton fabrics, while now not over a fourth of this demand comes from foreign sources. The Cotton Spin- ners’ Association of Japan is the most reliable source of information, and that placed the numbers of spindles in 1894 at 385,265, yet the Yokohama Cham- bers of Commerce placed the number in 1893 at about 600,000. Between the two -authorities we put our estimate of 500,000 spindles. The cotton mills of Japan will never be able to spin from the native cotton very fine yarn. The cotton is not suitable for anything but for the spinning of coarse yarns.

previous years. This year’s shipments fall 30,600,000 pounds below those of last year up to the same date. Only 2990 carloads crossed the Sierra Ne- vVadas this year, as against 4289 car- loads during the same period last year, or 71,760,000 pounds, as compared with 102,720,000 pounds. It is estimated that 1500 carloads will yet go forward this season, but even then the shipments will be fully 1500 carloads or 36,000,000 pounds below last year’s record. The decrease is attributed to the failure of the apricot and early pear and peach crops. Two severe frosts last spring caused most of the damage. The grape crop is very large, and the late pears and peaches have turned out well. As now estimated the total fruit shipments by rail from California this year will foot up 107,760,000 pounds.— New York Sun.

The time has come when operatives are no longer looked upon as a mass of machinery, to be moved to a greater or less degree of activity by rigid rules and regulations. It has been dis- covered that every employe possessses a certain individuality, which, if recog- nized, makes him more valuable to the company that employs him than if lumped in with the whole mass as sim- ply so many workmen, regardless of his special ability. Every human being is alike as regards recognition, and the overseer or superintendent who recog- nizes this fact and gives to each and every workman under him the credit that his skill merits, fs the man that will succeed in earning the largest divi- dend for his company. For over eight- ecn hundred years the lessons taught by the Son of God have directed us all to remember that the human family is one, and that we are all enjoying life upon the same foundation principles, notwithstanding some are more favored than others. Cattle are classed as herds, but not men.—Providence Jour- nal of Commerce.
