Tue Otficers-elect of St. John, Victoria and King Solomon Lodges were duly installed on Friday evening by Deputy Grand Mastcr Alam Murray. After the ceremonies were over, the brethren—some 40 or 50 in number— repaired to the Rankin House for dinner, and spent a very pleasant evening together.

Tur “Globe” has risen and explained that all the talk indulged in by its Grit ‘‘cotemps, ” about ‘‘a change in its business management,” and about ‘‘a prominent M. P.” being about to assume the control of it ata princely salary, is all fudge. A Western exchange says, “af we have a fair conception of Mr. Brown’s shrewdness, he will give up the ‘‘Globe” when he gives up the ghost.”

DA Curtosiry.—Mr. John Parker, of Kempt Road, is exhibiting a natural curiosity in the shape of an animal that is half cow and half mose—the part from the shoulders backward is framed like a moose, and the head from the end of the nostrils to across the eyes is also moose. Exrerracsmext ix Sr. Jangs’ Hatr.— The inelegant assertion of an Old Stager that ‘“‘musical and literary entertainments are about ‘played out’ in Charlottetown” was completely refuted by the success of the en- tertainment in St. James’ Hall last evening. An appreciative audience filled the room; and the musical and literary efforts of the various performers were well received. The instru-? mental pieces rendered by Misses Morrison and Dunn and Mr. L. Watson were highly pleasing to the audience; and the songs sung by Mrs. Strickland and by Miss Dunn were both en- cored. The readings and recitations also seem- edto give much satisfaction. They were as follows :—‘* McAulay’s Ivy” by Miss Smith; ' ‘t:he Old House,” by Miss Ber.; ‘‘ the Making | of Larry McCabe's Will,” by F. S. Orrawa. Dec. 26. _The Minister of Public Works has de- cided to take the top story off of the new Western Block Tower, and substitute iron terminals similar to the other towers. : Hon. R. D. Wilmot, Speaker of the Senate, has been confined to his room for the past ten days with influenza and bron- chitis, and is still unwell. Reports from the timber regions represent the season, so far, as having been very un- favorable to lumbering operations. Thomas Mayo, representing the King’s County, N. 8., branch of the Dominion Grange ; George Creed, representing the Hant's County branch, and L. Estabrook, representing the York, N. B., branch were presented to the Governor General on Satur- day, and were handsomely received.

Ortawa, Dec. 27.

The joint address from all the Temper- ance Societies uf the Capital was presented to the Hon. S. L. Tilley, in the Methodist Church, last night. Theres was a very large attendance, and among others on the plat- form were Hon. Dr. Tupper, Rev. A. A. Cameron, Ald. Herry, Vice-President of St. Patrick’s Temperance Society, Martin Battle and Jas. Johnston, Commissioner of Customs. Rey. E. A. Statford occupied the chair. Hon. Mr. Tilley, in reply to the address, made an eloquent speech ; referring to his last forty years connection with the temperance cause; he said hereafter, whether in private or public life, he would have two homes, one at Ottawa and one at New Brunswick.

Hon. Dr. Tupper delivered an eloquent address, in which he warmly eulogized hon. Mr. Tilley for his constant adhearance to the temperance cause.

The meeting was very enthusiastic and a great success.

Monrrea., Dec. 26.

This morning’s ‘‘ Gazette’ publishes three columns of correspondence, giving a complete history of the proposed scheme for the pooling of the gross receipts of the Montreal and Dominion Telegraph Compa- nies. One of the main reasons given by the Montreal Company for not abiding by Cap- tair. Maynes’ award was, the reduction by the Dominion Company, of the message rate, between the upper and Lower Prov- inces, from 50 to 30 cents per hundred words. After this reduction was announ- ced, Sir Hugh Allan urged the Dominion Company to increase the tariff to fifty cents which the latter company firmly and. dis- tinctly refused todo. The correspondence is quite racy throughout, and the closing letters of the President’s of both companies show a bitter feeling, which must lead toa still keener competition in the future.

Money market here very firm. Call loans 8 per cent., and difficult to obtain. Stocks dull, steady. Bank of Montreal, 4393; Commerce, 101; Merchants’ 79; Telegraph 110

The report of Canadian live stock from Ontario to England continues brisk, and it is estimated that 200,000 cattle and 500,000 sheep are now feeding for exportation next spring.

Western trains are blocked by a snow- storm.

Ex-Alderman Gearing, a defaulter, has been arrested in Detroit. Efforts are being made to revive the Can- adian party here. Hutt, Que., Dec. 26. The Governor General has donated $100 to the poor of Hull. Port Nevr, Dec. 25. Last night the ice on the river broke away, taking with it 27 cabins used for fish- ing. Two men were also carried off. Searching parties started along the beach between here and Quebec, but up to the present time nothing has been heard of the missing men. Lonpon, Dee. 26. It is stated that a former prominent Bos- nian leader has threatened the inhabitants of Serajevo that he will raise 40,000 men in Nova Bazar to punish partizans of the Aus- trians. ‘The same person has been agitatang against the Albanian League, who discoun- tenanced his designs against the Austrians. The League accordingly arrested him. Another snow storm has blockaded the Scotch railways worse than ever. It is thawing in London. Larne Loven, Dec. 26. The steamship State of Louisiana is still on the rock. The weather is very rough, and it is feared she will be lost with much of her cargo. Larne Loven, Dec. 26—p. m.

Half of the cargo of the steamship State of Louisiana has been saved ; all efforts to gave more were abandoned to-day, in con- sequence of the heavy sea breaking over the ship. The passengers have all returned to Glasgow. * Mancuester, Dec. 26.

The Guardian says: ‘‘There are no signs of the Oldham strike ending. A number of hands are being obtained from neighboring towns, and it is believed the new year will find many mills running at a reduction of wages.
