The admiralty has decided not to build avy more guns weighing over 50 tons. It has siso decided that every gun must be mounted in such manner that it can be operated by hand power.

A Washington dispatch? reports that from present indications, between now and March 4, there will be a deficiency of over $50,000,000, This mey be provided fur by the approaching session of congress, but after March 4 President Cleveland will be confronted by a depleted treasury with liabilities to the extent of $80,000,009 above the receipts and accumulating pension indebtedness alone at the rate of $12,000,- 000 a month. If any extra session should be called to legislate on the tariff, they will be met by the alarming condition of the treasury. Those who know the actual condition of the treasury, aside from the political necessities of the Democrats, regard an extra session as inevitable. The indications of the future point to serious complications which will meet the new Dem- ocratic administration upon the threshold of their return to power.

The charges, or perhaps more correctly, the insinuations, against the good manage- ment of the funds raised by General Booth tor the fartherance of hia charitable scheme have fallen throagh. Lord Onslow, the chairman of the Investigating Committee, happened, in the course of the inquiry, to use some strong language to the effect that “the spirit of fair play and justice, which

was the common attribute of every Englishman, revolted when he found Mr. Booth, accused of the gravest

charges, anxious to court the fullest en- quiry, but unable to secure the trial he sought.” Thereupon the chief accuser, Mr. Geo. Kebbel], announced that he ‘‘de- clined to make any charges,” and with- drew, afterwards msking a savage attack on Lord Onslow. Itis clear, therefore, that the charges were vexatious and not to be established.

Mow to Make Money.

The following statistics, gathered from reliable sources, are both interesting and instructive, and may be turned into money, so to speak, by farmers and poultry-raisers. The nember of fowl hes greatly increased in the United States during the last five years, but this increase has been larger in the New England and Middle States than in any other. Twenty-seven States report over one million each. Seventeen States report over two millions each. Thirteen Statea report over three millions each, while the State of Illinois, lowa, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania report over five millions each. In eighteen of the States the annual average product of eggs per hen is as follows :

It will be noticed that the average number of eggs laid per hen per year ranges from three dozen to over seven dozen and that those ener, reported the largest number of hens not make the most money, because, as the figures show, they only got an average of four to five dozen eggs per hen per year, while the New England States showed an average of from six to over seven dozen. The question arises then why do hens in the New

eggs per year per hen, while in Louisiana they only overags three dozen? The reason must be found in the fact that in the New

England States, Sheridan's Powder to make hens lay is almost universally used, while in the west and south it is not used much Louisiana has not gone behind but the North- ern States have gone ahead. There is no doubt at all but what the extensive use of Sheridan's Powder to make hens lay and for the improvement of poultry has boosted the poultry industry more than all other influ- ences put together. The poultry industry of this country now amounts to between five and six hundred miliions of dollars annually and the profite are said to be enormous. One man in Mass., near Boston, has made twenty thousand dollars a year for the last five years and many more have from five hundred to a thousand dollars, while thousands of women, children and invalids have earned a comfort- able living. All who want to know just how to make money, keeping and tending poultry, should send to I. 3.
