Apropos of the old English custom of apprenticing lads to learn a trade, it is said ot Mr. Robert Dywer, a recently deceased partner in the great London publishing house, Longman’s, that he was indentured to the firm in 1834, paying a fee of three hundred guineas. The custom: is almost absolute, so much so that it is said that there is now only one gentleman connected with the firm who was apprenticed in the orthodox manner.
