The proprictors of one of “ largest and best-known of these hotels are about to renovate their bui: ling and reduce prices 50 per cent, renting a room for 50 cents a day, for which $1 has always been charged. ‘The times have gone by when a rural visitor could not Visit the Metropolis without spend- ing a year’s savings. — The Predominant Language in the Berlin Conference.

Although French is the language of | diplomacy, there was more English than French spoken at the Berlin Congress. Prince Bismarck, Her von Bulow, Count Andrassy, Count Schou- raloff and M. Waddington speak fluent- ly. It happens that of the seventeen plenipotentaries only five, besides the iwo representatives from Paris speak French to perfection. These are Prince Gortschakotf and Count Schouvaloff, Count de Lunnay, the Italian ambassa- dor at Berlin, whois halfa Frenchman, and the two Turkish statesmen—Cara- theodori Pacha, who is a Greek edu- cated in Paris, and Mehemed Ali Pacha, who was born in Prussia of Freach parents named Denoit, and is only a Musselman by conversion. Lord Beaconsfield and Salisbury of course understand French thoroughly, but they have perhaps been wanting in practice. Prince Bismarck speaks French hesi- tatingly, but very correctly and with a fair accent.

English Books in Italy.

Irenaeus in the New York Observer, says:—L dropped in at a book-store in Pisa, and was surprised to find that large numbers of English books were kept for sale. I said to the bookseller I could not suppose there was a demand for so many books in a foreign tongue. He answered readily: “ You see they are chiefly professioaal ard scientific books, in English. The university of Pisa re- quires many, and all our educated men mast have the modern science, which is only to be had in English authors, and very little of it has been translated into Italian.” This is suggestive of the sig- nificant fact that the English language is the main medium of inte ‘course with the miad-of-the world. A French author told:me, a few days ago, that unless his books#were translated into English he derived’ very little profit from the sale of them. French and Italian books, unless of the trivial, volatile sort, like the novels and nove ettes, and plays, haye no readers at home. The university of Pisa has its three departments of the- ology, law and medicine, and gives a thorough course of instruction to those who would be well iustract:d. It once had a chair of astrology, a fact not to be overlooked when we set down the astro- logist as fools or imposters. We may have chairs of Biology and Spiritualism in our own. universities, and three hun- dred years afterwards we shall be laughed at, as now we laugh at the idea of teach ing, astrology.”
