Tue Barrirst Cuveca.—The quarterly meeting of the Island Baptist Churches met at Alexandra last evening. Quitea large representation of ministers and dele- gates from the churches was present. Rev. Mr. Spurr was chosen moderator, and a very enjoyable service was held. To- day services were held at 10 o’clock a. m., led by the Rev. Mr. Timin. At half-past three the council met to consider the ques- tion of ordaining Brother Kierstead (licen- tiate) to the gospel ministry; and this evening a mass meeting will be held, be- ginniug at 8 o’clock.

Nersawce Near Tue Ratway. — We | desire io call the attention of the Board of Health to the state of the gutter on the north side of Water Street, between Hills- borough and Weymouth Streets. For want of a proper outlet and sufficient grading, the water collects in the drain and becomes stagnant, and in warm weather very offensive and injarious. The people who occupy houses in the vicinity complain very much of this nuisance, and we think the travelling public as well must experience the sametrouble. A pro- per drain is absolutely necessary, and to avoid disease the matter should be attend- ed to at once.

Crry Scnuoor. Boarp. — The regular meeting of the City School Board was held last evening, Dr. Johnson presiding. The Schools will close for the midsummer hol- idays as follows: Queen Square, June 27:h; West Kent, 28th; Prince Street, 29th. They will re-open on the 3rd September; an extra week being allowed on account of the teachers attending the Summer School of Science. Mr. Howlett tendered his reg signation as Vice-Principal of Queen Square School, to take effect on the 30th inst. The teachers’ reports for May shows the total enroiment to be 1,363—803 boys and 561 girls. The average daily attend- ance was 1,118. The percentage of attend- ance was 86.

Tewresaxce Merrixe.— The public meeting last evening in Victoria Division Room passed off very pleasantly, the Worthy Patriarch, Dr. Ayers, presiding. Short addresses were given by a number of the members, interspersed with excellent music by the choir of the Second Methodist Church, and some well rendered recita- tions. Reference was made to the efforts of the Sons of Temperance in the year 1853 to secure 3 prohibitory liquor law for Prince Edward Island, and a copy of the petition prepared by William Heard, David FitzGerald and J. B. Cooper and presented toxthe Legislature at that time, was read. “Prohibition is by no meaus a new question at the present time, and if we ean judge by the recenz plebescite elections, there is reason to believe that a prohibitory liquor law will soon find a place on the statute books of the Dominion of Canada. Two persons signed the total abstinence pledge.

THE LIVERPOOL AND LONDON AND GLOBE INSURANCE COMPANY. The 58th annual meeting of this com-

pany was held on the IL6th ult., in the

Law Association rooms, Cook street,

Liverpool. We have received a copy of

the annual report submitted to the pro-

prietors. Notwithstanding the serious tire losses in 1893, the Liverpool and

London and Globe had a fairly succéssful

year. We make the following extract

from the chairman’s address :—

Taking the six years together, we have strengthened the fire reserve by £165,000, and the profit and loss account by £226,- 370, but to be perfectly correct, it must

be remembered that the profit and loss account now contains an amount suflicient at 3 per cent. improve-

ment for the dividend of 30s. per share per annum for five yeers. Taking the de. partments together, the whole resources of the company have been increased dur- ing these three fat and three lean years by £990,488. During these six years our fire premium income has increased by £338,- 668, while in spite of the greatiy reduced rates of interest, our inierest account shows an increase of £31,666. Fifty-eight years ago this company was founded, with a capital of £245,640. Its assets now amount to over £9,000,000. I venture to think that this brief review of our position will be satisfactory to you as proprietors, and also that the figures I have laid before you will give a perfect sense of security to those who insure their property with us.

It may be but fair to add that no part of the profits of the Company in 1893 came from Canada, where the Liverpool and London and Globe shared the general loss.

Mr. Leith E. Brecken has been appoint- ed Agent for the Company here to continue the business in this Province.

THE CAVERN EXPLORERS.

The details of the rescue of the explor- ing party which was immured for nearly ten day’s in the Lugloch cavern in Austra- lia show that the unfortunate prisoners would have perished if a box of provisions had not been lowered to them with a rope. They had exhausted their supply of can- dies and feod, and were rapidly succumb- ing to faintness and weakness, when one of the party heard a noise at the flooded en- transe of the cave. He waded out and found a rope, and after pulling up several branches of tree, saw a box with’ the lid pressed in. It contained rolls softened with water, sausages and twenty-two can- dles. This supply of provisions, which was lowered at a venture near the mouth of the cave, kept them alive till the diver appeared and effected a rescue. The cave was a new one, and had never been explor- ed. There was rivalry between two explo- ring societies, and one of them undertook to work when the weather was unfavor- able. The poor prisoners uaderground fancied that the other society had stopped up the watercourse in order to deprive them of the honors of discovery. The ri- val society, however, was foremost in the successful attempt to rescue them. So strong was the ruling passion that the leaders of the party resolved as soon as they were rescued to return in a fortnight to the scene of their terrible suffering. > -°2 <a

Basy Snow.-—Messrs. Johnson & John- son, who are ever up to the times, struck an idea in the way of window-dressing which seems to catch the eve of both old and young. In their uptown store, asa means of advertising children’s requ’sites, they have arranged a cradle with twins’in it, and a chair holding their older brother. The trio is carefully watched by a pretty young nurse, who seems to understand her business thoroughly. On the whole, it is very attractive, and is well worth a walk past at night, as it looks better under the shade of the lights than in day- time.

The Presbytery of Prince Edward Is- land met in the Presbyterian Church, Hampton, on Wednesday, 23rd day of May, and was constituted with prayer, Rev. Geo. McMillan, Moderator pro tem, with whom were present Messrs. Camp- dell, Sutherland, J. W. McKenzie, G. B. McLeod, T. F. Fullerton, ministers; and Messrs. Harvey and James, elders.

Mr. Fullerton was appointed Clerk pro tem. The edict in re the ordination of Mr. J. E. McCurdy having been returned as duly served, it was ordered to be again real. This being done, the Presbytery proceeded to the ordination and designa- tion of Mr. McCurdy to the charge of Tryon and Bonshaw. Mr. G. B. McLeod conducted divine servire. Mr. McMillan narrated the steps and put the questions of the formula, which were satisfactorily answered. Mr. MeCurdy was then ordain- el. Mr. Fullerton addressed the newly ordaired minister, and Mr. Sutherland the people on their respective duties.

The Presbytery dealt with the resigna- tion of G. B. MeLeod, minister of Covehead. The Clerk read a communica= tion from the congregation testyfying to the good work Mr. McLeod had done among them; and the desire to retain him

as their minister, if he could see his way to remain Mr. McLeod being unwilling to with-

draw, the Presbytery very reluctantly agreed to accept the resignation, to takeJ effect on and after the 27th day of July next. , ; Messrs. Mahon, Sutherland and Fuller- ton were appointed to draft a certificate in behalf of Mr. McLeod, in addition to the usual Presbyterial certificate, setting forth the valuable ‘services hey had | rendered within the bounds. Mr. . $utherland , was appointed to declare the congregation vacant on the 5th of August and to act as interim moderator of that session. The Presbytery placed on record their high sense of the Christian character and attainments of the late Dr. McKnight, Principal and Professor of Divinity in the Presbyterian College, Halifax, and lament the great loss which the Church has sus- tained by his removal. Prof. H. McD. Scott was nominated for the vacant Professorship. The Presbytery adjourned, to meet in the Hall of St. James’ Church, Charlotte- town, on Tuesday, 7th August next, at 11] o'clock, a. m. Mr, Murray at once gave up the purse, on a satisfactory description of it and its contents being given, and absc- lutely refused to take any reward, save a trifle over the cost ef advertising. Mr. Murray is not a rich man,and the amonnt, though not very large, might very well tempt dishonesty on the part of a less honest man. Mr. Murray is to be greatly commended for his persistent efforts tu discover the owner of the purse, anl for his evidently disintereste1 motives in re- fusing to accept a reward.

Sth. The arrangement of the keyboard conduces to great speed.

6th. Rapidity does not affect the align- ment. .
