He stated that the turning point in the agrarian struggle in Ireland was the rejection of the compensation for improvements'bill. There- upon tenants were compelled to combine in accordance with Parnell’s policy, which substituted constitutional agitation for re- volution and open for secret combination. ()' Connor denied that either the league or he sympathized with crime.

The conflagration raged four days. {t is estimated that 1,200 persons were kill- ed. Most of them were crushed trying to escape from the narrow streets. Ten thousand persons are homeless.

The story is now published that the case of leprosy in the London meat market, reference to which by the Prince of Wales created sorewhat of a sensation, is nothing but a common and non-infectivus skin disease. Newspaper men, who sometimes get taken in themselves, will sympathize with the Prince, as he writes his letter explaining that he was more earnest than exact when he made so bad a break.
Rev. ‘. W. Colpitts’ parishioners in Nee- pawa presented him a few days ago with a splendid gold watch worth $90, and an ad- dress; and he and his family were serenaded by the Neepawa brass band. Commenting upon the occurrence, the Neepawa Regiser says :—‘‘During his three years’ stay in Nee- pawa the Rev. gentleman has become very popular, not only with the members of his own church, but with the entire community. He is a profound thinker and an eloquent speaker. In short, his abilities tit him for one of the best appointments in the province, The people here would fain retain himself and family longer, did the church discipline ad- mit of it.” Mr. Colpitts is to be congratu- lated upon the evident success of his labors in the Northwest.
Sue Gave Him Toe Stie.~—On Satur day evening Police-Sergeant Cameron, armed with a warrant of committment for the proprietress, visited the house of a Lower Queen Street woman recently con- victed of violating the Canada Temperance Act, and took herintocustody. Sheappeared resigned to her fate, and asked permission to go into her room to put on a_ bonnet. The Sergeant, whose suspicions were dis- armed by the easy manner of his prisoner, granted the request, remaining outside while the bonnet was being put on. After waiting a reasonable time, and his prisoner not appearing, he opened the door and looked in. ‘The room was empty, and his prisoner not in sight. An open window over a porch in the rear of the building showed the means by which she had made _ her exit. After searching about, and failing to find any trace of his prisoner, the Ser- geant left, more than ever convinced that ‘* women are deceivers ever.” This morn- ing she paid the fine.
