On this assurance the Opposition re- mained confident’ in the belief that the de- feat of the Government was a certainty. But there was work to be done on the day the Legislature met, and here we allow the editorial correspondent of the Montreal Gazette to speak :—

“That was the position until this morning. At about ten o’clock Mr. Turcotte became de- cided, and wrote a letter to Mr. Joly, which he sent by a carter, respectfully declining the nomination. No answer was sent, but the Solicitor General, with another famous Artha- baska politician, Mr. Pacaud, were soon seen with the member for Three Rivers, and he was by them hurried off to the Government House. That was the statement, but I fancy it must have been the Government offices at the Esplanade. He was kept there some little time, and emerged apparently fixed beyond recovery, although Heaven only knows what might have resulted had a few hours elapsed
