We aceept this plea,even thongh it does not ag-ee. logically, with the Archbishop’s declaration that no Catholic can attend or assist in such @ sacramental non-Catholic marriage without rendering himeelf “ guilty of a mortal sin” and “ giving public scandal hefore society.” Perhaps Father Burke will kindly explain away this difficulty, which is, indeed, practically the gist of the whole matter, and the point to which Tue Examryer took exception.

It is needless to say that we fully agree with Father Burke’s remerks as to the sanctity of marriage and the importance of maintaining it. The habit of contracting marriages in drawing-roome and other places of c’mmon resort for ordinary purposes is, we think, to be deprecated as tending to lower the public estimation of the sacredness and the inviolability of the marriage tie. The most fitting place for a ceremony of such high importance is surely that in which the people congregate for the purpose of worshipping God; and Protestante as well as Cathclice will do well if they insist that the marriage con- tract shall be made in their places of public worship. If Christiane, in common, were permitted to attend marriages in such places, rejoicing in the happy consumma- tion and praying in common to the common Father of all fora blessing upon it, we think that the fact might be, not denounced asa“crime,” but accepted as practical testimony to the truth of the Psalmist’s words: “ Ob, what a sweet and pleasant plearant thing it is, brethren to dwell together in unity.”
