Life had never seemed so dull to Charlie as it did after they had left. So about a fortnight after the Smiths had landed Charlie arrived in London, and as soon us he could he called. He had determined to propose to Bessie, but as he had an idea they did not know his exact footing with his uncle, he thought the better course would be to lay his ease before old Smith before he spoke to Bessie. The man told him that Mr. Smith was con- fined to his room, but that Mrs. Hun was at home. Charlie would have pre- ferred seeing her husband, but as he could never think of waiting till the old boy was better—perhaps a whole week from Ressie !—he asked for a few words with Mrs. Smith alone.
