Bowling seems to be the most popular form of recreation here in Souris at the present time since the bowling alloys have been in- stalled in the New Parish Hall. It is hclieved that about thirty four teams have been organized up to the present. time. Many of the bow- lers comprising those teams are from the rural areas.

In common with many other localities we suffered the inconvenience of having no electric power from 9.30 p. m. on Monday evening to 8.30 p.m. on Tuesday evening. with the exception of an hour's low power during Tuesday afternoon. Tele- phone communications were re- stricted Io IIS far as Cardigan and Montague but the. lines were down to the city. Trees. fences and small buildings were blown down as the high winds. first from the north east and then from the north west reached gale force. some three to four inches of snow fell and slclghs. horse and man drawn. made their initial appearance.

Congratulations are extended to Mr. John Hanson of Burnt Point who on Monday. December ”18th celebrated his 88th birthday. Born in Boughton Is-land, he came to Burnt Point when a boy of slv or seven years of age and has resided there ever since. During hlx years there he has seen many changes take place as well as in nearby Georgetown. For the past number of years he has been the only per- scn still residing in Burnt Point of all those who lived there when he first moved from Boughton Island. or the Burnt Point residents of that day. Mrs. Hector Macxinnon. residee in Georgetown and in use is nearing the century mark. Mr. Hanson enjoys excellent health and vigor and keeps posted on the news of the world through the newspap- or: and radio. one of his hobbies is the keeping of a diary of local events and n general summary of weather conditions the year round.

To Try Accused . In Callie Case

Three men. charged with cattle stealing at St. Peter's. were sent to the Supreme Court for trial as their preliminary hearing concluded at Georgetown yesterday. They are George Macxay and his brothcr. Charles MacKay of Gagetown. NE. and Bernard Christensen cf Bass River, N.S.

The hearing was before stipend- lary Magistrate Joseph W. Mac- Donald and had been in progress since last week.

The men were arrested at St. Peter's by R. C. M. P. on the morn- inb of Dec. 8 and charged with the theft of five calves from Ches- ter C. Pratt, St. Peters. valued at 3300.

only evidence yesterday was cross examination by the Crown of Charles MacKay. who had com- pleted his direct examination when the hearing adjourned on Friday. He was the last of the three accus- ed to give evidence.

Under cross examination he told of leaving Sturgeon. P.E. I. at about 6.30 p. m. on Dec. '7 for BI'llfi- cnell. dropping off Christensen at Montague. The witness said he ;hen proceeded to pick up cattle winch were purchased, and Christ.- rnsen did the same.

Shortly after the witness arriv- ed. his brother George and Christ- ensen came. They had travelled to- gether from Souris.

The witness uctlccd some calves out of the stock pen and corrobor- ated evidence of the other accused concerning the turning loose of four thcy thought did not belong to them when they rounded up those that were runnl loose.

He told 0 Mr. Pratt getting five calves he identified as his from the car. The -witness said the car should have contained 26 sheep when shipped but the railway count at Moncton indicated only 23. Comment: by C not

Mr. D. L. Mathleson. K. C. of Charlottetown. who represented the accused summed up the cue. He contended that on the facts of the casn the Magistrate would be just- ified in discharging the three ac- cuscd. He said that it was unusual in cases of prelimlnaiy hearing for the accused to take the stand and also that the crown had no right to cross examination in a. prelimin- ary inquiry.

contended that no guilt existed and that it was a perfectly proper case for dismissal under the criminal Code. Mr. 5.3. Hessian. K.C.. crown prosecutor fur King's County. said that the defence had asked for tho prelirnlnery"'lnqulry- end that the Crown did not deny them any rights from the time of the arrest to the present. Many of the con- tentions of Mr. Methleson were quite true. he said. if Mr. Methio- son had allowed the Magistrate to sit on the case as I summery trial But this was not e summery trial but a preliminary inquiry. The verdict guilty or not guilty should be left to the Ocurt the defence asked for. and he asked that the usual procedure he followed and the men put on their trial.

The Magistrate then committed the three men for trial at the next sitting of the supreme court in Georgetown.

..' On Sunday evening the peo- ple from Mt. Stewart. Bristol and the surrounding districts filled Mt. Stewart United Church to capacity -to enjoy a very fine Choral Ser- vice put on by the Young People's Union of St. Johns Church.

Two young people did the usher- ing. Two received the offering and we read portions of scripture relating iihe Christmas stories through which were introduced the different chorals. Twenty-two young people were in the choir.

The service opened with a pro- ocssional -hymn followed by the use of the Beatitudes of our Lord as a -prayer. Each Bcatltude was re- sponded to with "Grant us this grace. we beseech Thce, O Lord.” This was followed by the Lord's Prayer in unison. Then a Psalm was read rcsponsivcly and the choir look over the service.

Through lhc fine and capable lcadcrshi-p of Mrs. J. L. B. Ander- son, who played the organ and directed the singing. the following choruses were well rendered: ”O Come All Ye Faithful", "Silent Night! Holy Night"; "Infant Holy"; "O Little Town of Bethlehem": ”Whilc Shophcrds Watched Thcir Flccks by Night": "Good C-hristinn Men Rejoice"; "We Three Kings": "The First Nowell"; "Angels From the Realms of Glory."

The minister then gave the Pas- toral Praycr and read the an- nouncimcnis. Miss Joan Affleck. on behalf of the Young People read an address of appreciation of Mrs. Anderson's work in training the young people and presented her with 9. Christmas gift.

The Rcccssional Hymn was an- nounccd. during the singing of which the Young People retired in the church entrance from where

'.'iie minister pronounced the Benediction. The Church was decorated for

the occasion with evergreens and many different colored lights in each window and a star in front of the pulpit.
