Bernarv McARRE, truckman, was brutally assaulted by Edward Gahan, on King Street, on Wednesday evening. Gahan, without any cause whatever, dealt him a blew of a heavy whip handle, which caused a severe fracture to Mr. MeAree’s skull. Dr. R. McNerit, of Stanley Bridge, has in his garden a fine growth of sugar cane, of a ponulion variety adapted te our compara- tively cool climate. The writer examined a specimen. which was about four feet long, and appeared to be well grown and juicy. A small number of the papers were to-day found in the possession of a discharged rr named Whitlock, whe made 9 ‘clean breast ef it,’’ and gave full particulars how another discharged newsboy named Furray committed the theft, sold the papers and purchased fishing gear. The young thief will in due time receive proper punishment,

Wanton Destruction or PRorgrtry.—One night last week, some evil-disposed persens cut the cables, sails and rigging, and stole the anchors of ten era dozen of the boats occu- pied in fishing oysters in Richmond Bay. Many of the beats went adrift, and were with difficulty recovered. It is hard to conceive who the parties were or what motive led them te such conduct. It is, however, dangerous pastime, and reminds one of the deeds of dark- ness perpetrated at North River two or three years ago. The punishment these fiends are now enduring for destreyiug the preperty of worthy and unoffensive citizens, should teach others that, notwithstanding even the cover ef darkness, villainous deeds will be traced out aud their perpetrators duly punished. Those who the other day took pleasure in destroying the property of industrious, hard-working fishermen, will, we trust, be brought to jus- tice and be rewarded acbording to the utmost rigor of the law.—Pioneer.

Tue Turr.—Mr. James Dover's mare Lady Bagnall and Mr. Archd. Holmes’ Lookout did good trotting at Kentville on the 25th inst, A telegram to the Halifax Herald says: In the first race four herses started—Mr. Dover's Lady Bagnall, Mr. N. Lea’s All Right, of Summerside, Harry Baker and Wormwood. The first heat was won by Lady Bagnali. Time, 245. Wormwood 2nd; Harry Baker 3rd. All Right, fer running, was sent back to 4th piace. In the 2nd heat Lady Bagnall won, Wormwood 2nd, Baker 3rd, All Right being sent back to 4th place for running. Time 2.46}. In the third heat Lady Bagnall! again won, with Wormweed 2nd and Baker 3rd-—the positions of the other horses being the same. Time 2.47. Both Lady Bagnall and Wormwood did some fine trotting and behave’ splendidly. The third race, or **2.38 class,” was the fastest ever trotted on the track. Three herses competed—Dutch- man, [impress and Mr. Holmes’ Lookout. The first heat was won by Dutchman bya head, i 2.374, with Loekout second, and Em- press a had third. The second heat was also concluded in the same order-—time 2.384. The third heat left the record the same as it was belore, the Judge pronouncing it no heat, owing to conflicting accounts as to the be- havior of the horses. The race will be fin- ished at two o’clock to-morrow (29th) after- noon. A close contest is expected.

Mr. A. N. Large, of this city, has entered his b. s. Messenger Boy for the races at Moose)ath in the three minute, 2.38 and 2,45 classes. Mr. A. Holmes’ Lookout is entered in the 2.38 and free-for-all classes, and Mr. James Dover’s Lady Bagnall is enteered in the three-minute and 2.45 classes. The horses are all in good condition, and will no doubt give good accounts of themselves.

Mr. A. N. Large’s horse ‘‘Little Fred,” after winning second money in race at Mon- treal was sold for the handsome sum of $1,200.

A Cabinet meeting was held this after. noon. It is understood the subject of an early session of Parliament was discussed, but what decision if any wae arrived at is not made known.

The Governor General is expected to arrive early in October, when Syndicate arrangement in detail will be submitted to him.

Now that the Premier has arrived specu- lation as to prebable Cabinet changes is again rife, and already rumor is busy with certain names. One of the latest, is that Mr Caron, M. P., will be sworn in as a Cabinet Minister at an early date.

Parnell has left New Ross for Dublin to hold a special meeting of the exeeutive committee of the Land League, at which a scheme for obtaining more detailed infor- mation in regard to the management of estates will be discussed. Parnell states that he does not fear any prosecution against the speakers of the Land League, as they would be abortive. Illegal drilling continues.

A correspondent of the Times, Dublin, says: ‘The murder of Lord Mountmorres excited feelings of alarm little shert of a panic among all respectable classes.
