Fraxcis Dovcerre appeared at the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court this (Wednes- day)-morning, charged with assaulting Wm. Horne, on Christmas night. He was fined fifty cents and costs.

A wumper of prominent citizens in St. John, including the Mayor, were recently fined for allowing their sidewalks te be ob- structed with snow. We suppose our peo- ples’ time is coming.

His Honor the Lieutenant-Governor and Mrs. Haviland gave a grand ball at Govern- ment House last evening. The party wasa large and brilliant one, and dancing was kept keptup with spirit till about two o'clock this morning.

Fvriovs driving through our strests, especially on market days, is becoming too prevalent. The police seem to take livtle if any notice to this violation of the law. Often horses, minus the bells, appear en the streets without ‘‘ let or hindrance.”

Next to Victoria Bridge over the St. Law- rence at Montreal, the Bridge of Tay-—the scene of the recent terrible disaster— was she largest railway bridge in the world. It was within a fraction of two miles long, having 85 spans, eleven of which were 245 feet each! The accident is the most disastrous and fatal railway accident on record.
