OCTOBERFEST — When did it all start?

Since we're having Oktober— fest this weekend here at U.P.E.I., I thought an article might be appropriate.

The inspiration for Oktober- nfest started roughly some 160 years ago in Germany when a »prince who happened to like horses was about to be marr— ied. Some 80,000 people att— ended what was initially a horse race and a party in honour of the Prince's marr— iage.

The peeple had such a good time that King Mar Josef I decreed the festival be an annual event which has stood ever since. Through time add- itions were made to the fest- ival,‘exhibition of farm pro— duce, Bavarian crossbowmen, parade of Oktoberfest partic— ipants in their respective regional costumes. Since spec- tators eventually became hun— gry and thirsty watching the various exhibitions, food and beer stalls were introduced.

Presently the festival be— gins late in September and will last for sixteen days: appar— ently the weather at this time of year is conducive for this sort of thing. Sulky races and dressage supplement the horse races: giant cabbages have given way to the biennial diaplays of agricultural mac- hinery, prize herds of cattle and even entire model farms. The parade involves a mile and a half procession of some 4,500 people in the regional costumes of Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France; floats, horse drawn beer wag— ons and brass bands. Various, other parades have also been added.

All that can be heard is a gentle snoring from the Beirleichenzeit'(beer corpses tent) which have been set up for those who don't remember where they live: in addition to going awa with your stomach fill—. ed you will undoubtably also leave with the heav- iest hangover of the year!

Our Oktoberfest goes from

The two main streets are centered around the mono- lithic drinking halls of Munich (Lowenbrau, Hofbran, just to mention a couple) The- festival's special drink is Wies'nbier which is brewed in March and well aged for extra strength. The Oktoberfest of today has crowned "beer" as its undisputed King.

A parade is given in honor for the opening day of the festival and at noon the Mayor of Munich tops the first barr— el and when the three cannons, boom, this signifies the open- ing of some 800 concessions at the Oktoberfest festival. "*TheZOktoberfest in Germany (and elsewhere celebrated in the rest of the world) is something of an alcohol— ics midway: people sampling various kinds of beer from litre stone mugs, others can be seen, "Imagine try— ing to drink a barrel of beer when you're already bombed?" But like anything elso when the beer is palat— able (which German beer cer- tainly is) food, people and music have a tendency to mis extremely well with usually only minor incidents occuring!

Here are some statistics quoted from the Oktoberfest of 1970 which you might find interesting. The beer laid 172 folk flat on the ground (162 in previous year). The eldest victim' was 83 and the youngest was a mere 8 years old. It Pcan certainly be expected especially when literally millions of people partake in the festival in-Germanyr-
