THE ELLIOTT AT BOSTON.

Steamer and Cargo Damaged by Fire ---Starvation at Mayaguez.

At late hour on Thursday evening the British steamer Elliott, Capt. Nelson, trom Porto Rice, with a cargo of sugar, steamed up the harbor aad dropped auchoz in the stream. She probably brought the last eargo from the island which wil! be re- ceived from there until Porto Rico is ip the hands of the Americane,

Tne Elliott carried a cargo of salt fish and food stuffs from Halifax, N. 8., to Mayaguez, P. R., and on the outward passage fire was discovered in the bunkers, and before it vould be extinguished « con— siderable portion of the cargo had been destroyed. The cargo was landed, and the steamer then proceeded to Ponce, where she loaded suger tor this port.

The island was in a state of suppressed excitemont when the Elliott lef there, and the inhabitants were daily expecting the arrival of the U.S. forces. Apparently the sympathies of the natives are eutirely with the United States, and it would not be sur- prising if they joined forces with our artay and attacked the Spaniards, With the possible exception of San Juan, most of the ! harbors are unfortified, and these towns are not expected to put up @ very vigorous resistance.

Capt Nelson states the condition of the natives of theis'and ie wretched in the extreme, and that men women and child~ ren arestarving. At Mayaguez this was particularly noticeable, and as the captain made his way to fhecustom house to enter his vessel he was besieged by tully 100 etarving people, asking alms to. buy food to stay the awful pangs of hanger. The same scenes were constantiy enacted as the British consal bad done much to alle- viate the eufferings of the poor people. For this reason particularly Capt Nelson thinks the inhabitants of the island will be glad to see the Americans in possession.

The E'jiott left Ponce on July 13th, and

that same afternoon, while passing through Mona passaye, a warship with two fanoels | was cighted heading to the eastward. She was woo far away to discover her nation- | ality, but she was believed to bean Amer-| ican ship. [t appears that the Elliott only escaped | destruction oa her outward passage by a narrow margin. Early onthe morning of June 26th, wheu about 500 miles from Porto Rico, fire was discovered in the

coal buokers, which are sitwated well aft. The fire had evidently been smoi- dering for davs and had eates its way

along the «woodwork, consuming some of the beams and burning much ef the cargo. The crew fought the Aames fer nearly 1 2 hours before they were gotter under con- trol. Twohundred bags of flour were thrown overboard in order to reach the flames, aod nearly ali of the remaiuder of the cargo was either ruined er badly dam - aged,

The Elliott is a weoden veesel, and it was feared that the fire would eatthrough the sides, which would mean the total des truction of the steamer. Fortunately th tons of water poured in through the batches had the effect of extinguishing the flames, but not until part of the deck had been consumed and the fier part of the ship-seriously damaged.

A survey held after the Elliot reached Mayaguez found that tbe hull was souod enough for her to proceed to Ponce for her cargo, but repairs will have to be } made on the vessel bere. Her cargo was ordered sold for the benefitof all coa- cerned.

A Larce Ece.—T here is on exhibition at the Weldon House, Shediac, a specimea of hen fruit which for size 1s hard to beat. It measures 64 by 8 inches and weighs a quarter of a pound. This large egg was laid bv one of the fock of Brahmas, which were introduced into this province by Mr. S. J. Sturgis, of Greene Corner, Maine.— Moncton Times.

Dates and Programme ofthe Autumn Meeting.

The Direstors of the Charlottetown Driving Park have fixed the dates for the autumo races Ou their grounds for the 6th and 7ihof September next. The races will be as follows ;

First day--3 minute, 2.26 and 2.49 classes.

Second day—2 50, 2.32 and Free-for- all.

The 2.40 class wili be open to trotters and pacers,

$1050.00 in prizes are offered.

The directors have also secured the guide- less horse Tommy from Ontario. This horse hae a record of 2.67}, and will trot on both days without a@ driver and without runoing mate.

This Jast is an exhibition entirely novel here and one which we are sure will please every person. A horse going around the track twice without adriver in the re- markably fast time above mentioned will be something never seen here before even by a horse with a driver.

Ther spent most of their time trout fishing in the lakes at East Point, and it is said tuat their catch totalled 400, the largest balamcing the scales at 3 lbs 2 ozs.
