to the wants of a people who at that time found it hard to pay the very moderate fee he charged for his services, and this he continued to do for a quarter of a century without professional help, even in the most difficult cases, till as the country began to improve young men from the settlements entered the field and relieved him of a portion of his work.

In 1836 Dr. Kaye had married Mrs. Isabella Watson, who lived with him at Brudenel! Point till 1846. She then went home to Britain to see friends and transact some family business. In the foliowing year she sailed from Liverpool in the ship Canopus and was never more heard of.

Shortly after this the Doctor left the farm at Brudenell Point, and pnrchased a tract of land oa the north side of that river in the immediate vicinity of Georgetown. Here he built a cottege, laid off a garden, and planted trees of native and imported var- ieties. In course of time he changed the aspect of his new lvcation from that of a briery, tangled wilderness of dead bushes and decaying forest trunks to one of neatly enclosed fields, waving with golden grain and fragrant with clover blossoms. The trees grew with wondertul eelerity, being planted and tended under the hand and eye of one who never did his work perfunctor- ily. Their stately trunks and massive fol- iage as they surround the dwelling and out- houses, or stand as sentinels in the open fields, form an attractive feature in the landscape, and elicits the admiration of all visitors of taste and culture to the eastern capital. Dr. Kaye was thoroughly well read in scientific agriculture, and brought with‘him to tne Island many of the latest and most popular treatises on the subject. He was thus able to impart many new ideas of farm tillage tothe people in his neighborhood at a time when farm litera- ture was very little circulated in the country settlements. Inashort time he became aleading member of the King’s County branch of the Royal Agricultural Society, waa regular in his attendance at its fairs, shows and meetings, took a promin- ent and iively interest in its movements for the advancement of the people of the Island. His genial presence and friendly greetings to the farmers of his acquaintance on these oc- casionf always tended to encourage and in- fuse new life and energy among them and the otiicers present,

A man se eminently useful and widely res- pected was not suffered to remain always in private life. He was called to the Legisla- tive Council before that body became elec- tive. In 1862 he was elected for Murray Harbor and sat the full term of four years, serving during that period as member of the Executive Council, under the leadership of Hon. James Pope, and was one of the seven members of that body who were at that time in favor of Confederation.

As health officer for the rt of George- town, which position he held for thirty-five years His services at three different times, when small pox invaded the town, and threatened the adjoining townships should never be forgotten. His, courage, prompt- uess and skill on these occasions proved more than a match for the emergency, and both town and county were spared a terrible visi- tation. His term of office as County Coroner can coeval with his tenure as health officer, and he eontinued in discharge of both till his advanced age an failing powers rendered him incapable in politics Dr. Kaye was a conservative, and although he seldom (perhaps never) made a speech in public, he was one of a band of very able and talented public mento whom the government of the colony was for the time being entrusted, aud assisted in carrying various {measures of public utility, such as steam navigation with the neighboring pro- vinces, the establishment of a savings bank, the purchase of the Canard esta‘e, &., &., through the Legisiatare. He survived by a

good many yearsall but one or two of his} M

colleagues in that once famous administra~ tion.

The Doctor was a member of the Charch of England, and the Rev. Mr. Simpson, of St. Peter's Church (city) conducted the services on the occasion, both at Trinity church, where the coffin was carried by the pall- bearera, and at the cemetery.

The Masonic body, of which the Doctor is said to have been the oldest member ou the Island, sent deputations from several lodges to attend the funeral. They arrived at stout twelve o'clock in

College. We find at the close of each year when the test of true merit comes, they are not up to the average.

Judging from statements made by Chief Superintendent McLeod and a few others, one would expect better results. No one doubts Superintendent McLeod's ability to examine the Summerside High School and judge of the true situation.

A little ‘‘taffy” is all very well for chil- dren, but there seems to be something more required before they can get through the Prince of Wales Colleges. Charlotte- town and other schools that are making such good showing must certainly be fed with sometiing more substantial. Yours truly,
