Business Looking Up.
Since the opening ef navigation there has been qnite a stir about the wharves and commercial houses of the town. The in- ports this year are fully up to the average ; but it is worthy of remark that fewer goods have been placed in bond than heretofore. Merchants have paid their duties promptly; and we assume that they intend to require prompt payment from their customers. This
is a pleasing sign of the times. The credit system is evidently doomed. With no bankruptcy laws and no imprisonment for debi, there is little encouragement for those inclined to give and take credit indiscrim- inately. Our merchants have risen to the occasion. They are beginning te do busi- ness on the only safe basis. The folly of dealing at a loss—eutting off their noses to spite their neighbers faces— the madness of giving | ong credit and never getting paid— have been fully demonstrated. The lesson of experience has been taken to heart. We are now abeut te see business done on the principle of sure protits and proupt pay- ments. Under this system the incubus of County Courts, e.c., etc., will, te a large extent, be removed, and the Province will prosper -vhough, as will be seen by a letter which we quote frem the Monetary Times, there are some fools among us yet.
Since the removal of the ice blockade, there has been quite a brisk expert trade in horses, cattle, sheep, and potatoes. The enterprise of Hon. Capt. Richards in hav- ing a steamer come here to load petatves for the Old Country, is highly commenc- able, and sure to be appreciated by the farmers—especially those of }Prince County. We hope, it will result in a handsome profit to the Captain. The export, this spring,of a number of first-class cattle direct to thie British market, per steamer Prince Edward, marks an era in the trade of this
Province. Though our pevple have sowe drawbacks in the raising of cattle which the farmers of On- tario and the Western Siates have
not, they also have some advantages in this trade which the others do not possess. We hops the day is not far distant when the export of fat cattle will bea prominentfeature of the commerce of Prince Edward !sland ; and we trust that this first venture will prove highly remunerative to the gentlemen engaged in it.
On the whole, a wholesome, confident tone pervades business circles on the Island; and, witl: the blessing of Providence on the labors of our husbandmen, we look for- ward to a prosperous season.

Sin, —A meeting of the electors of Ward 5 was held some time ago, of which meeting Mr. Matthew Allan was Secretary. | purported to be a report of that meeting ap- peared ia your paperover the Secretary sname., The report says that a motion nominating Mr. H. B. Smith, as acandidate, was carried by the meeting. With this statement no fault can be found. But I find that Mr. Allan states, in a letter which appeared in the ‘* Patriot,” that ten to one of those at the meeting were opposed to Mr. Smith’s pomina- tion. When does he consider ;it his duty to tell the truth? Oris it by accident that he tells it aay time? Poor Matthew is hardly responsible for what he says or dees. But it is too bad that a meeting of citizens should be miscepreseated by the clique whe control him, If he has friends they should look after him, and net allow him te append his name te statements fer the preas. Itis only a short time ago that he published a statement de- claring his readiness te shoot a man for the sum of twenty dollars. I would not be sur- prised to find him next advertise that he will make any desired statement for the sum of ene dollar.
