The Afghanistan campaign has been an]

Roberts was before Cabul on the Sth inst, General Baker and MacPherson have been detailed in strength to attack the enemy, who have assembled from above Balehissar. If these forces can be brought into action, Gen. Roberts thinks the enemy will be able to make another tight. The Russians, meantime, have been on the alert, and since the complete success of the British has been assured, have been planning to secure the leniency of England. According to the London “‘Standard’s” in- formation from Berlin, Russian overtures te England relative to Afghanistan, have either been, or are about to be, made. The Cvar desires the assurance that England will not occupy Herat or the Bodakshan

An Advertising Fiend.

(From the San Francisco Post.)

A «nique incident occurred at Bald- win’s Theatre the other evening, which was not down in the bills, and which sharply iliustrates the proverbial push and ingenuity of certain San Francisco adver- tisers. It appears that the advertising agent of a well-known Kearney street auction house had engaged one of the upper stage boxes for Thursday’ evening, and a few minutes after the doors were opened the ushers were paralyzed at beholding a large canyass transparency being expeditiously and quietly erected in said box, and bearing vn its surface, in two-foot letters, the fa- miliar legend, ‘“‘Try Guffey’s Condensed Chowder!’ They at once hurried to the box and begged the occupant to desist. That enterprising individual simply shrug- ged his ehoulders and went calmly on light- ing Wax tapers for his illumination. The manager himself rushed breathlessly to the spot ahd ordered the agent to leave the house ee

‘Not if I know it,” replied that individu- al,‘ cheerfully. ‘‘I paid $20 rent for this

box until 11 o’cleck, and I intend to do what | please with it, bet your life.”

In vain the manager stormed, pleaded end olfered to return the money—to pay twice the amount even. At last, as the audieuce had begun to gather, he ordered the ushers to remove the sign by force. At this the agent deliberately drew his revolver, and, Lacking the whole crowd out of the box, locked the door. In this emergency a coupe was despatched for the man’s prin- cipal, Mr. Guffey, who arrived in a few moments post haste. He was hugely amused at his employe’s persistency, and at once ordered the removal of the bone of contention. As the much disgusted adver- tiser struck his tent, a bright idea illumin- ated liis disappointed visage. Taking Mr. Guffey aside, eagerly :—

“Well, if Ive got to quit, wouldn’t it be better to have them put me out by force |”

‘*Why, so?’

“‘Bocause, you see, that would make it a splendid assault and battery case. Be in all the morning papers. Magnificent ‘ad.’ Don’t you see ?”

But it was not to be, and the cliauypion advertiser furled his banners, aud sadly filed out to slow music by the orchestra.
