Hiring practices discussed

New sign, election forum and other issues addressed at council

tudent Union President Todd King ex- S pressed concern about student union hiring practices during the last student council meeting on Sunday. According to regu- lations decided upon some years ago, priority was to be given to qualified full-time students, that is, if thereare no qualified full-time students in the running a part-time student may be considered. According to King, this regulation has not been adhered to strictly enough. King asked to voice his concerns incamera (confidentially)and following, it was decided to either follow the regulation as it stands or change it in the near future to reflect present views. King had sought three students to make up a hiring board, an objective body that would review hiring decisions to ensure fairness. After getting no response from advertisements, King went to the Pit and found three students who expressed interest. At the student council meet- ing, One more name was mentioned as an

interested candidate. From the four names, three were picked by secret ballot: Scott Gar- ret, Jenny Gordon, and Wyoma Vanderkirken.

The council also discussed a proposed new promotional sign for the campus. A new sign may be going up on campus, depending on the approval of the Board of Governors (a group including the president and some people named at the front of the calender who are never actually seen on campus). The two-sided bill- board that used to sit on the roof of the Confederation Centre of the Arts box office willbe placed against the library near the corner that points towards the book-store, adjacent to the Chaplaincy Centre. Student activities will be posted on the sign regularly. According to Ryan Bradley, Vice-President of Finance, first priority will be given to events that pertain to the betterment of student life: for example, demon- strations that give the students a voice in government. The sign was donated gratis to U.P.E.I. by the Centre but needs minor repair,

which will proceed with the Board of Gover- nors’ assent to its use. Tara O’Conner, C.F.S. rep and V.P. External,

asked for input concerning the location for the

Election Forum, which will include five candi- dates running in the Hillsboro riding. Such events are usually held in the Pit, but O’Conner was concerned about overcrowding. She sug- gested the Barn and another council member suggested the cafeteria, but both were dis- missedas too far off the beaten path. Finally, the Pit was decided upon with the consolation added that the crowds look good for the cameras.

A motion was carried to hold a referendum for the student council constitution in Decem- ber. CIMN will now be open for broadcasting until 2 am.

Bruce Davison was voted by acclamation as the Chief Returning Officer for next month’s student elections.
