We were aiways under the impression that Mr. McDonald was an ardent supporter of a grant in aid of Catho- lic schools. If, however, the conduct atiri- buted to him be true, we can only say that it is no wonder rigid Presbyterians oppose the gucstion of a grant. On the ground of principle it is justice itself. On the ground of expediency and gratitude it is equally just, and if it were not that the Presbyterian element predominates in the Councils of the Country it would hardly ve refused. We neyer could understand what it is that causes Presby- terians to have such a dislike to gige aid or comtort to Catholicity? Can it be that they wish tu keep the Catholic portion of the popu- Jation in ignorance? or is it from some inherent dwlike known only to themselves? From " whatever cause the dislike proceeds it appears that they are the most determined enemies to the question of a grant of mouey in aid of Catholic Schools, This week we do not wish to pursue the subject, At another time we moay lave occasion tu give our views at greater jeagth upen it en tee : Tm editor of the Progress ought to be very mach obliged to us for giving him material out of which to manufacture a two column article in his issue of the 22nd inst. We are pleased to find that the ITonorable Mr. How.an has brought before the Assembly the subject of stocking the rivers of this Island with }salinon. The Hon GeorGe Beer, some weeks ago, by a communication to the newspapers, in- troduced the same subject to the notice of the public We have several rivere well adapted f r salmon, and we need but say .that salmon are a sery valuable fish, for which there is an un- limited demand, and if they abounded in our rivers, they wouid annually bring ue large suins ofmeney There would not be the least difficulty in creating aa extensive and valuable saimon fishery in St Perer’s Bay and the rivers which empty inte itt Winrer River, the Dunk River, and several other rivers might also be stocked.—provided always that the salmon could be protected from depredators. lt would be easy to fill the revere with salmon, if the rivers could be protected. The difficulty of protecting the fish is the ebiet one. Let the Government pass the requisite laws. and sell ‘by auction the ex- clusive right to the salmon in the several rivers of the Island, and ere long we shal! have abundance of salmon, and a new branch of industry,—a new source of wealth will kaye been created without any cost to the revenue, and by the withdrawal, for the general good, of individual privileges now little mere than veunnal and altogether vuluciess

Stephen Swabey, Esq., delivered a lecture in St. Andrew's Hull, before the Catholic Young Men s Literary Lostitute on Wednes- day evening Ixst, on the politica! and public life of the late Hon. Edward Whelan. The learned lectorer reviewed the political career of the late Mr. Whelan from the time of bie first arrtvii in the British Colomies ; and co ably did he portray his character, that the members of the Institute unanimously agreed to request Mr Swabey to furnish the manu script to enable thew to get the entire lecture published.

Mr. Henry G. MeIntire will lecture before the above Institute on Wednesday evening next, on the life of O'Connell.
