$3,000 fora party in lieu of Honoraria. An Honoraria is a gift that was given to councillors at the end of each year. The SU stopped giving these gifts a number of years ago in order to save money. Instead, they give a party to all the SU volunteers and work- ers. This isa great idea except the Student Union Executive still get there $250 honoraria each year.

$1,500 for ‘‘Student council activities’. I guess this includes the ‘‘Booze Cruise’’ around the harbour that the councillors were treated to at the first of the year. What’snext?

With these hard economic times upon us, the Student Union must become more accountable to the students of this university. It is about time that they showed some fiscal responsability, instead of this uncen- trolled spending spree.

| am pretty disgusted with our student government and you should be too. Maybe with the Student Union elections starting on the 14th, some of these concerns will be raised. After all, it is your money they are spending.

Peter Hanus and Joseph Murphy’s article on Affirma- tive Action in the 23 January 1992 issue of the X- Press isa classic example of the straw man (person) argument. This fallacy involves setting up a false position in order to then demolish it thus creating the impression ofa successful counter agruement.

The article which supposedly addresses the current proposal concerning hiring procedures at U.P.E.I. completely misses the intended target: Lhe Wehekl: proposal concerns Employment Equity not Affirma- tive Action. The difference is that the former seeks to create a level playing filed forall qualified candi- dates, whereas in some versions if the latter, qualifi- cations are reduced as a means of redressing some previous inequity suffered by a disadvantaged group.

While it is appropriate to debate the employment policy proposal, the debate can only be appropriately conducted if it about the policy under discussion. Sincerely,

I am growing more and more alarmed everyday by the systemic discrimination against women and minorities

-inoursociety. The phallus-bearing Europeans (espe-

cially the dead ones) of our university community would like us to believe that everything is all very well and peachy, but it is becoming more and more apparent that this is not so. We are not fools, we know how language is used to ‘“*keep us in our place’’. While browsing through the U.P.E.I. calen- dar the other day I noted an overwhelming number of ‘*seminars’’ being taught at this university.

WHAT?!? NO‘‘OVULARS’’? I must call upon the faculty of this university, the Student Union, and all the students to band together in order to ‘‘correct”’ this social injustice immediately! We have nothing to lose but our chains!!!
