Sr. Perersscvrec, August 11,—Official reports say that three separate Russian columns succeeded in surrounding a large Chinese force at Hai Chan, and that see- ing Russians advancing from all directions the Chinese fled, leaving e dozen obsolete guns behind them.

The Russians pureued the Chinese for 35 versts until they were exhausted and compelled to abandon tbe pursuit.

COMMENT IN LONDON

Lonpox, August 11.—The morning papers exprese satisfaction with the latest developments in China, and the average comment is that China is now genuinely suing for peace through Li Aung Chang. Deepatches printed this morning con- cerning the battle of Yang Tsun, accorde ing to the Daly Mail: correspondent’s ac count, show that the attack wus led by Americans and British.

The Chinese say that they retreated be- cause the British poured poison into their troops.

Skeleton With a Gag in the Mouth Unearthed Near Preston.

Prestox, Ont., Aug 10.—John R Nat- emith, while ploughing on his farm a Riverbank, made a gruesome discovery. His ploughshare turned up @ human skull from under two feet of soil, which 8 very sandy in that locality. Some thing in the young man’s appearance excited euspicion, and a doctor being called d agnosed his case as leprosy. Dr. Smitb,of the Tracadie inetitution, was at once communicated with, and if the Bathurst doctor’s diagnosis proves to be correct, the result may be further spread of the dread disease which it was hoped ie was dying out. The young man 13 2! years ef age, and it ie said that some of his near relatives are already inmates of the institution.
