Senator Howlan in reply expressed his thanks to the Chairman and gentlemen who,on behalf of the people of New London, presented him with the foregoing address. it was a pleasure, he said, to « public man to find that his humble efforts in the ad- vancement of the interests of his country, met with the approval of the people. it was a strong incentive to persevere in his work. He regrotted, as he had no doubt they all did, the death of their old repra- eontive, the Hon. James C Pope, who. if alive to-day, would. no doubt be found as- sisting this great public work.

There were reminiscences called forih by the flattering words of their address which awakened echoes of the fact when fighting the battle of the people for freeland. It was a pleasure to one of the remaining few on theis side of the grave to look on at that meeting and see the effecta of those strugglers of the past in the self-reliant and satisfier. faces of the hardy tillers of the soil now before him, whose fathers braved the dangers of the deep and the hardships of the pioneers life in this country, that their sons shouldown the smiling home- | atead: which graced every hill-side among the well tilled farms of New London.

ST. PETER’S CHURCH.

St. Peter’s Church presents a more festi val appearance than it hag for many yours at this season, the decorafiens being peculi- arly appropriate and t&@efully disposed. To one entering the church the front first presents itself,wreathed and festooned with spruce bands, fruit and flowers. Large wreaths betweon the hammer-beams hang aliernate with banners, each displaying the names of some locality memorably connect- ed with our Lord’s life, while the sun in different stagessof his course, from the rising at Bethlehem to the full day, gloomy with clouds at Jerusalem, completes the various devices with stars arranged wish

In the interstices of the rood screen are colored transparencies; the pillars, the rood and the rail are wreathed with delicate spruce bands. Rich hangings adorn the altar and the east end of the sanctuary, along which is placed the invitation of the Venite Adoramus—‘‘ Oh ! Come Let Us Adore Him.” The bangings, used for the first time yesterday, are from the celebrated house of Messrs. Pratt & Sons, London. The exquisite blending of various shades of blue and green must be seen to be appreciated. The altar wings are crimson, handsomely embroidered. Gur Lord’s monogram, and a device of cross, pastoral staff and star in white, ap- pear on red banners on either side of the east window, these in turn betng sur- mounted by stars. On the north side of the Chancel is a banner with the device : “‘@ame Down From Heaven”; on the acduth side a similar one, bearing the words : ** And Was Made Man.” A handsome new aet of ro-tables adorns the altar. The whole effect, tastefui and rich, stamps the decora- tiows with the character peculiar to tha fes- tival. ST. PAUL'S.

The decorations in St. Paul's Church this year are especially tasteful, and re- flected great credit on the ladies and gentle- men who had them in charge. The pillar wreathing, being of quite a different con- struction from that heretofore used, pro- duced an exceedingly pretty effect. The reading desk, with its neatly made and well hung wreath, interspersed with red berries, wus deservedly much admired The base of the handsome white marble font was beautifnily decorated with wreaths, berries and ferns. The whole church had a thoroughly Christmas look, which must have afforded much pleasure to the Rector and congregation, and satisfac: tion to those who had, wnder the super- intendence of Mrs. Alex. Brown and Mr. Pope, one of the Church wardens, put so much time and pains into the work of putting upon the old church an appearance in keeping with the glad message of Chriat- mas tidings which was once more to be pro- claimed from its pulpit.

Tribute to Dr. Hobkirk

Our much esteemed and oldest physician was yesterday the recipient of a splendid tribute from his patients in the city. He was waited upon and presented with the following address .--

Deak Sir,—The sympathy we have felt with you, in your recent severe illness, prompts us to offer our sincere congratula- tions on your recovery.

We need hardly say, that those among whom your useful life has been speni, feel a deep interest in all that concerns you. Very many of your fellow citizens have good cause to praise your talents ; and many of us have received from you, kindness which would even be remembered with the live- liest gratitude.

The poor among us have ever found in you a generous friend, whose akill was al- ways freely exerted on their behalf ; and in many homes in Charlottetown, your name ia always s: oken with a blessing.

Many paryers have been offered for your recovery ; and we hope, before long, to sea you in your accustomed place again.

We beg you to accept the accompanying token of our esteem and affection with our sincere wishes for A MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Some Poultry.

Says the Montreal Herald: Some two weeks ago there were poultry shows at Smith's Falls, Carleton Place. Arnprior, Almonte and Packenham, which included a large number of United States buyers to visit those sections of Lhe country, and led to the ultimate purchase by them of some two hundred tons from the Boston market The shipment of thia poultry was made on! Monday last, and comprised a solid train of twenty cers, which had reached Boston on Wednesday morning. The time oceupied in transit,—from the time the cars were loaded until delivery in Boston—was forty hours. The train load was valued at $30,- 000 to $35,000. It is scarcely necessary to add that the owners were greatly pleased with the expedition made.

A Sad Accident.

A MELANCHOLY accident occurred in the Railway Yard to-day, by which Mr. David McGregor, Yardmaster, one of the most estimable employes, is likely to lose his life.

He was engaged at-shunting in the yard Shortly after twelve o'clock he~ went in between box cars to uncouple them. His foot caught ina guardrail. The engine wesin motion at the time, and before he could: release himself the box car to the rear struck him, and he fell forward from the trnck. Both trucks of one car passed over his legs. One wheel caaght him on the foot and cut him upwards to the thigh. The samo wheel passed over the other leg at the ankle, and broke it uff. He sang out the usaal signal to stop. The engine stopped as soon as possible. Mr. John Munroe, baggageman, immediately ran to his assislance. He said to Mr. Munroe: ‘* J am done for.” There was cousiderable difticulty getting his body from the position in which it was found, ove car being thrown off the track by the accident. Help came, and the unfortunate man was taken to his home at the end of Water Street. Dr. J. T. Jenkins and Dr. 8. R. Jenkins were immediately sent for, and did all they could to relieve him.

Dr. Stephen R. Jenkins, who has charge of the patient, states that on the left side there is a compound fracture of the thigh in the upper third. There is also a com- pound comminuted fracture of the left leg above the ankle joins) The bones are com: pletely crushed. On the right side there is & compound eomminuted fracture of the thigh, fracture of the patella, and crushing of the knee joint.

The chances of his recovery are very small.
