A Double Crime.

CUMBEALAND, Ont., Oct., 9.

An inquest will "be held so-day on the bodies of Mary McGonagle, aged 14, and her sister Eliza, aged 12, who were found dead in the woods, about one mile from this village. The two girls are the daughters of James McGonagle, who resides on John Giamble’s farm, two miles from here. The children had been attending school here, and were there on Tuesday, the 7th, and left for home with the other scholars, but did not return and their parents were not over anxious about them, as it was & wet stormy evening and they sup- posed the two girls had remained in the village, as they had previously done on a wet evening. The girls not returning Wednesday evening, search was made for them, and about 10 a mw, oe party came on the two bodies, cold, and dead, lying on their backs, with their heads together in an unfrequented bye- road. The two girls were lying side by side the clothes of both deranged. The eldest, (Mary) had a school book on her lap. Their tongues protruded and eyes rolled up, and a dark circle on each neck showing strangula- tion, with evidence of both having been out- raged. A warrant was issued for Naicisse Larocque, who was seen following where the girls went, and who has been arrested. Cum- berland Village isin Rusell County, on the Ottawa River.

A. F. Gaut, the cotton king, said to-day that negotiations for the purchase of the Halifax, St. John, Moncton, Windsor, Ste. Anne, Montmorency, Chambly, Kingston and Braiyord grey cottcn mills were pro- gressing satisfactorily. A charter will be asked for -immediately, and each of the mills will have a representative on the board of management.

A Waryixne ror CHartorretown. — The inquest on the body of James Bedford, who was accidently killed on Upper Water Street, Halifax, a short time ago, was held at that place on Wednesday evening last. The jury returned the following verdict: ‘‘ That James Bedford who camefto his death on Water St.,in the city of Halifax, tripped on certain plank laid on the sidewalk to cover a hatchway, and in tripping fell through an opening in a fence into a pit or excavation for a cellar and strik- ing with violence upon a large stone lying in the excavation, the said being about 8 feet said James Bedford received a blow on his neck whereby his spine was broken, and from «hich injury he died on the 5th October.” It is wnderstood that the deceased’s next friend has decided to institute proceedings against the city for $10,000 damages.
