Someone roars, Panthers score...

On Sunday November 12, the defending CIAU Champion Universite de Moncton Blue Eagles met the Panthers in hockey at the Civic Centre.

The Panthers opened the first period with avengence. Cory Power gave the Panthers their first goal, with an assist going to MacPherson. Shortly after, Power scored his second goal, this time assisted by Greg Power and Lemay. Tyler Ertel scored the third Panther goal, assisted by Luzza and MacPherson. Before the end of the first, Dave Lemay put the Panthers up 4-0 on an unassisted goal. UPEI outshot Moncton fifteen to six in the first period.

The second period saw the Panthers

add to their lead. MacPherson, assisted by Cory Power, scored the fifth goal. Todd Walker put the Panthers up 6-0 on a goal assisted by White and Nelson. A goal late in this period by Jacob of the Eagles spoiled Mitchell’s shutout bid. Once again the Panthers outshot the Eagles, nineteen to thirteen.

The third period saw the Panthers continue their scoring onslaught. Walker scored his second goal, the team’s seventh, assisted by Henderson and Nelson. The Panthers eighth goal was scored by Clarke Trolley, unassisted. The final score was 8- 1 for the Panthers. Congratulations goes out to the Island’s own David Mitchell who had a great game between the pipes, only giving up one goal. Also of note was the fact that three goals were scored while the team was shorthanded.

Around the Rim

The UPEI women’s basketball Panthers tipped off against St. FX on November 16. The game was postponed from Wednesday, when, due to high winds, the teams were not able to make it to the Island.

The ladies came from behind within the last five minutes of the game, and were ahead during the last two seconds. St. FX

tied the game and forced the contest into overtime. In overtime, the Panthers hung on to defeat X by a final score of 71-67. The player of the game was Eireann Rigby who netted twenty-four points.

The next games are against MUN on November 18 and 19 for both Panther teams, and against St. FX for the men next Wed. All games are at the Sports Centre. Anyone with student ID has free admis- sion.

NBA Stay in School Campaign

With their first season of play in the NBA already underway, expansion teams Vancouver Grizzles and Toronto Raptors are looking to put the ball in another court. Following the lead of established teams in the NBA, the two teams have commenced a Stay In School Forum. This is designed to make Canadian youth aware of the social and economical consequences of dropping out of high school.

The project was started in the

The Mt. A Mounties rolled into the Civic Centre to take on the Panthers on November 16 in what was the Panthers last home game for this semester.

The Panthers got on the board with the first goal in the opening two minutes. The goal.was scored by Forbes MacPherson, assisted by Willie Skilliter. The next goal for the Panthers was scored by KJ White, with assists by Lavoie and Nelson. The Panthers added a third goal before the end of the first, scored by Skilliter, assisted by Lemay and Ertel.

The second period saw the Panthers continue to dominate the Mounties. Todd Walker scored the fourth goal, assisted by Nelson. The fifth goal was added by MacPherson, with an assist to Sproul, hefore the end of the second.

The Forum has already received support from the theatre chain Cineplex Odeon as well as the Canadian govern- ment. Minister for Human Resources Development Canada, Lloyd Axworthy, says he is delighted that the two Canadian NBA franchises have adopted this cause. He also hopes that the teams’ leadership will inspire more companies to become partners in the project.

With thirty percent of students dropping out before they graduate the Stay In School Forum, working with the NBA hope to send a message to Canadian students. Hopefully this partnership will enable that goal to be reached. —

The Panthers kept up the pressure on the Mounties in the third. The Panthers’ sixth goal was scored by MacPherson, assisted by Cory Power and Lemay. The Panthers capped their lead with a goal by White with an assist by Nelson. MacPherson was player of the game. Craig Johnson got the shutout win between the pipes for the Panthers. The team also had two shorthanded goals.

The team travels to UNB this week-

~ end, followed by a stop at STU before the

end of the semester. The Panthers play host to the Alberta Golden Bears on Dec 30. This game should be a good one and will serve as a warm up for second semes- ter play.
