A Worp rn Season. ~The habit of boys driving dogs attached to tleds along the streets and sidewalks of the city should be stopped unless the dogs are muzzled. An evening or two ago a dog being driven in this way attecked a pedestrian tearing hisclotbieg and biting bis leg.

Tickets To Hatrrax.— The depart- ment of Marine will iseue tickets by the steamer Minto to Pictou and return on the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th inst., at one dollar and a half (oalf tbe usual fare) good for one week from day of issue, to enable thore who wish todo so to see the embarsation of the second Canadian contingent a’ Halifax.

Not Conrinmep.—A letter received ip Sharlottetown last evenivg from Victoria reports that the writer has not been able to obtain any confirmation of the report in circulation regarding the loss on Lak- Bennett of cattle belonging to the McKay brothers. As other letters from people who should know if sucha disaster oc- curred makeno wention or it,it is probable that the report ig not correct.

Women’s Lecat Covuncit.—All preei- dents, or their repreeentatives, of affiliated societies, and all members of the executive committee of the L. C. W., are requested to meet in P.W. College on Saturday next, Jauuary 20th, at 3.30 o’clock. Interesting Letter from Mr. Lorne.

Betmonr, South Africa, December 11, 1899.

Dear I am wr.tiog under diffi- culties. We arrived here yesterday morn- ing. We were up the day before at 3 a. m., dressed in heavy marching order, got on the train and were in the pouring rain from 7 @. m. to 2 p. m.

When we arrived here from Orange River, we pitched our tents, changed our shirts, socke, etc., and then another storm came on, which continued until about 2 o’clock this morning. We slept with all our clothes on, rifles at our sides, ban-~ doliers (cartridge beit>) under our heads and we fel! in at 3.30 a.m , and remained under arms until5@, m., when we had break fast.

There are quite a number of dead Boers and horses, riflee and ammunition in the hilis about @ quarter of a mile from here.

I beve to go on picket duty to-night in the hills. As we expect an attack at any time, we are always ready for such an event. There was sowe fighting at Mod: der River last night,—our men captured one prisoner.

This place is a}l hills--like the other camps we bave been in; but it ig uct so sandy. This is the place where a British officer was killed who refused to allow his men to shoot a Boer who showed a white flag. The officer was shot by the Boer in going to see what the laiter wanted. There are lots of ortriches here that have been taken from the Boers. There is much cattle, horses, sheep and goats.

One Boer prisoner at Orange River asked me if there were mapy men left in Eagland. I told him there were millions, —that what were out here would never be missed. He taid “that can’t be so for England is notas bigas Atrica.” That is the opinion they have of Britain. But they will change their minds pretty quickly, We expec: to be with the force that will relieve Kimberley. We leave our camp arrives FO

I have seen mayflowers out here. There are plenty of beetles, lizards, and flies galore.

I hope mother is not worrying about me, for there is really very little danger—we never think ofit. Of course we know that the chances of all the Canadians pull- ing safely through this thing are very slim, but there are «0 many wounded slight- ly and eo few killed that we never givea thought tothe peril. The boys have lote of Kruger’s eilver coins, bullets, parts of rifles and goodness knows what all.

* * * Allour Island boys are well,— those who left Charlottetown with us and those from Fredericton and Quebec. The whole contingent is wel] and ready to figbt.
