The continuing debate and discussion on the pro- posed fixed link crossing of Northumberland Strait has moved into the final week be- fore voting day Monday, Jan- uary 18.

“Islanders for a better Tomorrow,” the province- wide group favoring the prin- ciple of a fixed link crossing urge all residents of Prince Edward Island eligible to vote to be sure to go to the polls on January 18 and vote yes to the question “Are you in favor of a fixed link cross- ing between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island?”

A yes vote in the plebiscite will allow the provincial and federal gov- ernments to proceed to the next step in the complex is- sue of a fixed link, the call for proposals. Seven consor- tia have indicated a desire to construct a fixed link cross- ing and they will be asked by the Federal Public Works Canada to present propos- als for the construction of a bridge or a tunnel.

On receipt of the propos- als, each one will be screened and closely studied to insure

they meet all of the criteria

set down by both levels of governments before they are approved and costed.

Prince Edward Island premier Joseph A. Ghiz, in a letter Gated Novem- ber 6,1987 to the Honourable Stewart MacInnis, federal Public Works Minister said the government of Prince Edward Island was in sup- port of the concept of a fixed link crossing. How-

ever, the Premier also said

that full support for the fixed link crossing would depend on the satisfactory resolution of the ten basic principles in- cluding concerns about high- ways, Wood Islands, sub- merged lands, tolls, dis- placed workers, economic de- velopment of Borden and ar- eas. Atlantic content, en- vironmental impact, fisheries and utilities.

These areas of concern have a lot of unanwsered questions and both Premier Ghiz and Honoutable Mr. MacInnis have agreed that unless these areas are fully addressed to the satisfaction of both governments, a fixed link will not be constructed.

In order to satisfy both governments, the consortia developing the proposals are going to have to complete in- depth studies of the areas of concern and show the fixed link will be benifit to Prince Edward Island.

However, in order to come to that conclusion Is- landers must vote yes in the January 18 plebiscite. A no vote will mean that the concept of a fixed link will be shelved for all time and the questions of concern will never be answered.

- There are many steps that still have to be com- pleted before construction of a fixed link can actu- ally begin. The January 18 plebiscite is just one of the first steps in a long process.

There are questions to be answered. These will only be answered if a majority of Islanders vote yes in the plebiscite. Islanders fof a better Tomorrow ask all el- igible voters in Prince Ed- ward Island to vote yes on January 18 for a better fu- ture for our province. .
