ONE WAY OF GAMBLING.

Electric Fans Utilized Somewhat After the Various Gaming Wheels,

Science bas been called to the aid of the wheel of fortune. Even the wind which electricians call to their aid to relieve suffering humanity is now util- ized to further the gambling propeusi- ties of the mau who would ratber match pennies than keep those he earne&. In Pittsburg there isa gambling resort in nearly every business house, und rou- lette is the game.

How does this happen? you may ask. Well, if is all through the facé that people suffer from the heat. Some bril- liant inveuter came to the conclusion that instead of the ordinary revclving fiy frightener that moves so deliberate- ly that the average fly forgets its exist- ence, if a motor could go around s0 quickly as to be invisible to the eye it might be that with blades to it a minia- ture cyclone could be produced. The air engendered by that electrical tornado would cool a sweltering world where clerks and even bankers mopped their collective brows and panted for the shades of the mountains until they got so hot that they were ready to engage any nation upon the face of the earth in mortal combat. This inventor car- ried out his philanthropic idea, and the resultf was the placing upon the market of the electrical fan.

Now, this fan contains six blades, and every one is ahummer. It is so portable that it can be placed most any- where so long as the wire connection is not broken. The fan was introduced into select circles. It found instant fa- vor. No more mopping of brows, no more chasing of flies from heads which resembled the famouscranium of Uncle Ned. The electrical fan was willing to work double turn and blow the face off the superheated owner if necessary. The public was correspondingly grate- ful and rested under the artificial storm in peace and quiet.

But Pittsburg frowns upon gambling, officially. It has shut up its poolshops, it has closed its blind pools, it even re- stricts the great American game of draw poker. Still, like the shattering of the rose vase, the predilection for go- ing up against any old thing which may trim some one else argl enable the winner to walk off with the ‘‘pile’’ clung around many a person who onght to have known better. The pleasures of the sportively inclined were restricted to such infantile sports as matching for the drinks, shooting craps in blind al- leys and similar diversions of no par- ticular standing among the elite. Mem- ories of faro, roulette and other means of quickly losing money floated around the average citizen. His soul revolted against the ‘‘shoestring’’ methods to which unkind fate and the police had reduced him. It is said that eveay ne- cessity finds some remedy. So it has proved in this case.

If a roulette wheel merely consisted of red and dark marks, with a little black marble coursing around, uncer- tain where to stop and seldom stopping where it ought, then a swiftly revolv- ing electrical wheel ought to stop in some uncertain place when the current was shut off. Acting upon this scheme, the inventor of the new form of gam- bling proceeded to number the blades. Then each member of the gambling fra- ternity puts his money upom one blade.

If the suspended aninfution cf tbe fan proves that his guesswas ccrrect, he wins the stake. It is all so easy and so fair unless some one “‘loads’’ one of the blades. It is incidentally such a hgndy way of waging money, it is filling se well a long felt want, that in most of the offices where electric fans are used there appear upon the blades the num- bers, ‘‘Que, two, three, four, ive and six,”’

To the uninitiated they mean little, but to the now habitual player on this newly devised wheel of fortune they evidence much. He walks intoa strange oftice, incidentally turns off the current of the electric fan, and if he sees the vumbers there he immediately remarks, **I choose six,’’ or whatever may be his favorite number. Some member of the firm or a clerk immediately places his faith upon some other number turning up, and there itis. In a minute there is a first class game going full speed. It is all so simple—turn on the current, then turn it off, aud win or lose, as the case may be. There are many of these wheel, or fan, players who work on systems they think will win. They make a study of the electric fanina certain office. They discover that a ‘*five’’ or a “three’’ may be reasonably certain to turn up if the current is only allowed to be turned on for a second or so; that if the wheel is revolving at its full gait another figure will appear. Upon these principles they stake their coin. The majority of the players, how- ever, do not figure upon any such deep laid plans. They arise in the morning and consider that a certain number will prove lucky, and they go and play it. It is really astonishing how the prac- tice has spread. It is related that in several large office buildings heavy sums are wagered, and The Press re- porter is informed that there are few buildings in which there are not elec- trical fans bearing the telltale numbers. The saloons, of course, do not permit it, for if such a form of gambling were discovered it might result in their 1i- censes being revoked. —Pittsburg Press.
