The author of the **MNew Handbook” is carried by the natural zeal of the specialist still further. In an ordinary way a croquet party consists of eight, and no swaiu or maiden can run into too grave flictations in the sight and within earshot of six other persons. Was there ever a propcsition inthe world which stood in such need of qualifications and modifications, or which, without these, was so thoroughly incredible? Just as uncertainty and complication iu the jaws of the land lead to litigation, so do uncer- tainty, intricacy, and confusivn in the laws of croquet lead to bickering and quarrels among people whose little hands were never made to tear each othes’s eyes. It is the greatest of merits in a game of any sort that it opens no door to doubtings and uncertainties. Cricket would be an impossible game if the wise fore- sight of our ancestors had not established the anthority of the umpire, whose decision is as prompt as it is beyond dispute. In croquet there would be a good deal of difficulty in per- suading anybody to be umpire. The invidious ness of such a position would be @ thing unequalled since the days of the Choice of Paris. Let us look at the kind of problem whith presents itself. Originally, the tight croquet was the only permissable mode. Now, you may have, besides this, both the loose croquet and the slipping croquet. This seems very simple. But there is a sect, pestilent as the Monophysites, or Nestorians, or Basilidians of the early church, which grimly holds that “to rovers ouly should the privilege of the loose eroquet be accorded.” Others, on the con: | trary, hold that the privilege should only be | a‘iowed to those who are notrovers. Anybody who understands human nature will see that a difference of this sort is enough to convulse the | best-regulated crouquet ground in England. | And any body can decide the controversey. Jt is desperate, and it is never ending, because

Impurities of the Blood.
