Field House To Open On Schedule

Field House is on sched- ule and nearing completion “by the end of December”, says a foreman. Opening of the Field House will be expected in February when the University’s Athletic As- sociation will be taking con-

ery year gives students the

chance to be more involved in the Intramural programs, other programs, the use of equipment, as well as other services.

The Field House will be put into use in the spring of next year until just before Christmas when the 1991 Winter Games will be com- ing to UPEI. The games will taking place in January of 1991, during which time the UPEI campus will be shut down, and residents _ will be removed from their rooms.

Back in 1980, a commit- tee was formed to decide on

how we were going to im-— _prove on our sporting facili-

ties and where it should be placed. It was decided that the university needed a ren- ovated rink, a 6 lane 25 me- ter pool with one meter and three meter diving boards, a level entry wading pool, and a field house similar to that which is now being built. The proposal was presented to the Board of Governors and the committee was dis- olved in 1981. The proposed project was forwarded to the Maritime Provincial Higher Education Committee who estimated the complex could be built at a cost of 5.6 mil- lion. However, PEI did not act on the need, and then when facilities were needed for the Canada Games in 1991, and with lobbying on the part of UPEI, we were able to secure our position as hosts for the games. Be- cause there are no other fa- cilities on PEI that meet the needs of the Canada Games, the whole university will be- come the Athlete’s Village. In the design of the com- plex, they were made to be flexible and efficient to fill the needs of the university community in general and competing athletes.

of two parts, the lower level is the recreational and fit- ness level. On this floor there will be the Control Centre, an exercise/aerobic room, whirlpool _ facilities, racquet courts for squash and racquetball, a weight room, training and fitness center, almost 300 lockers in the locker rooms for general students, athletes and offi- cials and of course the main courts. Each locker room will be equipped with show- ers, saunas and hairdryers.

Bleachers will be avail- able to accomodate 1500 spectators when games are played on the competition court. Top quality flooring will be used on the gym floor to reduce injuries. They are

provisions for the surface to be able to be used to ten- nis. The new Field House

will be able to accomodate any sporting event except ri- fle shooting.

On the second level is the Track, this is how specta- tors will access the bleach- ers, without having to ever touch the court floor. Also on the second level are of- fices, work areas for the Ath- letics Department, a meet-

ing room, canteen facilities

and a classroom to seat 40 students. There will also be a viewing area for the rac- quetball and squash courts. The canteen will operate during games and will be run by Marriott Foods, al- though snack machines will be located throughout the building.

The inside of the Field House is nearly done, and it should be a much needed and appreciated facility at UPEI.
