I would like to address this letter to the author of “Celebrity Corner” Winston Duncan.

You keep mentioning in your “column” that people apply vari- ous stereotypes to university ath- letes. If you are truly serious about changing this situation you would monitor you content more closely and also realize that the name you have chosen for this item a.k.a. “Celebrity Corner” does not lend itself to any pur- pose except to reinforce these types of opinions.

I, like the Gem reader who praised you work in the last issue, am in favour of profiling athletes. However, not in the manner you have chosen.

Personally, I find it irrelevant and self-defeating to your pur- pose (I’m assuming this is to pro- vide the Gem with athlete pro- files?) whether someone prefers American to Canadian Women, Ontario to PEI Women or if someone is here to get laid or a degree or both.

Why don’t you try ask- ing questions that encourage re- sponses concerning people’s ath- letic interests,- how they work and train to improve their abili- ties, their individual performance record on a team,etc...

Perhaps if you tried these sug- gestions and changed the name of your commentary to “People on

UPEI vs AVC

We as UPEI/AVC students feel we should respond to the Oc- tober 26th letter to the editor. In it, Lou freely expressed “our” opinions as: “They do not want to be considered to be a part of UPEI.” We three students have our own opinion on this. We are glad to be a part of UPEI, com- ing from larger universities we ap- preciate being a name and not a number. We appreciate the beauty of our campus and the Is- land hospitality.

In regards to graduation we are not trying to exclude the rest of the campus. We ARE try- ing to include our families, friends and spouses in this event. We have worked for at least 8 years to graduate from here and these people have sacrificed a great deal in helping us. We would like to share our graduation with all of them, not just two. Other profes- sional/graduate schools are per- mitted their own ceremony to al- low for more guests per student. Why aren’t we?

We feel that we are being excluded by UPEI. The library, the health centre, the bookstore, the barn and all student activi- ties end when “UPEI” ends, but we are still here (without these services). Who is segregating whom?

We are happy and proud to be a part of UPEI but we feel that we should be recognized as a pro- fessional school as well. If there are feelings of animosity gener- ated because of this we apolo- gize, however we feel that this is no different than any other inter- faculty animosity. Every faculty is proud of their particular field, we don’t see the harm in being proud of ours.
