AcapemicaL.—The Academy of New uilasgow is a thriving institution, under the superintendence of that talented young Islander, Mr. James McLean, who so highly listinguished himself at Dalhousie College. The New Glasgow Chronicle says that Mr. McLean “seems to have enkindled in his pupils that love of knowledge and even to have endowed them with that facility in its acquirement for which he is distin- guished.”

Buitpine at SumMersipe.— We understand that Mr. Richard Hunt intends building on the Darby property which he has lately come in possession of. Mr. Wm. Harris Architect, of Charlottetown, has teen en- gaged on a plan of the building, and has matured one which we think both hand- some and convenient,and displays considers able talent and ingenuity on the part of the designer. The residence will be quite an ornament to that part of the country.— S. Journal

Atserton. —The other day we took a run up to Alberton, amd we were surprised on arriving at that place to see what fine dry streets the people had the pleasure of pro-~ menading —not a particle of mud was to be seen. How different are the streets of our town. There are several new buildings in course of erection, and some that have | een in frame all winter are now receiving the finishing touch. Our friend John L. Me- Kinnon, is in exceedingly good spirita, and, about the Ist of June he will appear before the public as the editor and proprietor of the Alberton Pioneer. We sincerely hope that Mr. McKinnon’s enterprise wiil turn out a profitable one to him. Hon. G. W. Howlan is busily engaged in moving his household effects down to the Point. He also intends to move his business down in the course of a few months. The mills of Messrs. Wiggins & Hunter are in full blast, business generally presents a very lively appearance.—S. J.

In Memoriam. ~ it having been proposed to erect a College Ckapel in memory of the late J. M. Hensley, D. D., for many years Vice-President of King’s College and Prox

fessor of Divinity, a committee was ap-| pointed some time ago to put the project

into shape and collect subscriptions. The building isto be of brick or stone and the cost, exclusive of internal fittings, is not to exceed four thousand dollars, of which sum we understand, half has already been subscribed. The memorial character of the Chapel is to be indicated by a tablet or

Encewnia of the College, on the 26th of June next, when the plans of the Chapel and the form of the memorial will be sub titted by the Committee to the Board of Governors. Tue Lopster Fisnery.—The Halifax Chronicle is, with us, “ glad to learn that the Minister of Marine and Fisheries has been induced to withdraw the obnoxious order in regard to the catch of lobsters, and to fix the “close season” a month later, than was at first proposed. The season will be from the 10thof August to the 20th of September, instead of from the 10th of July to the 20th of August.”

Mr. Brypers’ Sarary has lately been in- creased to $8,000 per annum, exclusive of incidental expences, travelling outlay, etc. Our generous Reform Government last year paid the expenses of offices for him at Ottawa. Lucky Mr. Brydges !—It is now easy to understand why trackmen’s wages must be cnt down on the Government Railways, — Watchman.

FLoops in Ontario.—The water in the Ottowa river is three feet higher than ever known, and is rising rapidly, Muchdam age done to wharves, and storehouses im- mersed. At Chaudiere, near Ottawa, the river is actually rolling through the mill yards. Large quantities of logs, timber and barns, pass over the falls continually. Destruction is immense. Fears of greater disasters are entertained as the river is still rising.

Sreamers.—The Albert, having returned from the Magdalen Island’s—brought over about forty passengers from Pictou on Thursday last. The Allert has on board a large quantity of freight for the Hon. J. C. Pope, at Alberton ; but owing it is said, to the ice on the North side, she was unable to reach that port. —The Princess of Wales and S‘. Lawrence, have, at last, commenced their summer work,—The MV. 4. Stary, from Halifax, arrived on Thursday and sail- ed again on Friday.—The Carrol from Boston arrived on Friday and sailed on Saturday.—The Princess of Wales left Shediac, on Saturday, but after remaining seven hours in the ice, was obliged to re« turn,

Tae Erersity or Ponismment,—Rev. D. J. McDonald, a Presbyterian Minister, whose orthodoxy on this point has been questioned, sends the following explana- tion of his belief to the Presbytery :

“In regard to the eternity of future punishment, | have arrived at no conclu- sion at variance with the doctrine of the Church. 1 do not conceal that I have some doubt whether the Church is absolutely correct in her interpretation of certain passages of Scripture which, nevertheless, I admit, point with almost irresistible force in the direction of the endless punishment of the wicked. I have no intention of making this doubt a part of my preaching. Having made this statement, I have no diffi- culty in declaring my adhesion to the teaching of the Confession of Faith on this point, the more especially as the language used in almost entirely borrowed from Scripture.”
