What will happen next to UPEI Athletics. Our luck for the New Year got off to a good start on Saturday evening for the Lady Panthers when they defeated Dalhousie in overtime with a basket made by Eireann Rigby; then it turned sour. Sun- day's game saw the Pan- thers taking on the Acadia . Axemen. The women held on strong for most of the game and then trailed in the final minutes. With the score tied at 58 and four seconds left on the clock Jen Johnston went to the line to shoot two free throws. She sank both baskets to give the Panthers a 60-58 lead.

Acadia rushed down the court and this is what happened (from my van- tage point). One Acadia player (I don’t need to say her name because, well, she’s from Acadia so who cares) saw that there was one or two seconds left she tried to get through the Panthers defense line, but they were all over her. When she finally did get through she jumped in the air then the buzzer went, then she took the shot. The referee counted the

three point basket which gave the Acadia Axemen the win with a score of 61- 60. I did view the tape after the game (with the volume on) and it was plain as day. She defi- nitely took the shot after the buzzer went. Can the outcome be changed you might ask? No, it can not. In the CIAU, the only time video recording can be used is for suspensions handed out to players, coaches, and staff.

Maybe it is time that the CIAU catches up with every other sports league around the world and use video replay. The games are being filmed anyway so it won’t cost anymore and we all know that is the big concern these days. If the players know that the tapes can be used at anytime then maybe they will behave in a proper manner. (I think they already do but you have to give reasons that the administration will like, right?)[You tell ‘em Pat -Ed.]

Again my article is not all that positive, but I think you, the readers, would like to know when bull s#&t occurs and why. We all need something to talk about don’t we?

A quick note on the men’s action this weekend: they lost on Saturday against Dalhousie, and lost again on Sunday against Acadia. These are the first games the men Panthers have played since losing three

players over the Christmas ;

holidays.

That brings me to my next point: Why did the three players leave? This is what I know: Rob Evans was not the biggest scholar last semester so he is taking a break from school. Pete Richard did not feel that he was re- ceiving the playing time he deserved. Jason MacDonald, well, I think it was for many reasons that he decided to leave the team. I read in the Guardian last week that one of the reasons was that he requested financial assistance and was told he would receive it, and he didn’t. So you can be the judge.
