Sovrez oF Ovn SrrexetH. — Just here let me say that the strength of this grea. order rests in ite subordinate lodges; in the character of their individual m movers; in the steady, practical performance of the duties of the hour; in the constant and practical discharge of their obligations to each other. In these days of magnificence and displays, let us seek to keep well in view the foundation principles of this great order found in the lessons taught and the duties to be performed in the subordinate lodge.

Let us look within a lodge of Oddfellows, get behind, so far as we can, the curtain that veils its proceedings. The lodge is cailed to order, the minutes read, and the first inquiry is, does any brother know of a sick brother or brother in d stress. If there beJa member of that lodge whom disease hus over-powered or upon whom the hand of misfortune is heavily laid, he is assured from that moment of the sympathy, the aid, the active pity of every member of the lodge. I do not go further into the busisess of the lodge I have struck the corner-etone of Oddfellowship, this duty of practical brotherhood. It has carried brightness into many a darkened home, and sent a thrill of joy into many a despairing soul.

Ou, ye cynics, who sneer at these fraternal associations and ridicule the little ceremonials that attach themselves to their work; who walk on a plane of being above the rank and file, aud breathe a more exclusive atmosphere ! Oh, ye sceptics who doubt the truth of human brotherhood; who call friendship a sham and charity a delusion, who spesk of these beneyoleut orders with « shrug of the shoulder and dispute the good of their ex- istence! Come with me and visit one just one—ot these little households into which, through the agency of an Widitellows’ lodge, light has entered, and if you do not hang your head in very shame, then, indeed, shall I believe that there are some souls even in this day within whose fliaty walls the tra th can never enter.—-Chas, M. A Sight Worth Seeiprg.

Probably few persons ever saw the breathing apparatus of 4 human being liil open for inspection. From « hospital cad- aver, we once saw the lungs and bronchial | tubes removed, and blown up as a_ boy; would a bladder or Loy balioon, until the! fiae bronchial tubes and air cels «f the lungs were distended to the fullest «x:ent. In this state the Jungs were hardened by immersion in alcohol, so that they remain- ed expanded when the air was let free. With a sharp knife the wind-pipe and lungs were split open, so that it was easy to trace the bronchial tubes gradually diminishing in size from the wind-pipe itse:f, becoming finer and more delicately branched, until smaller than tine sewing cotton, these tiny bronchi lead into the air-celis beyond, to convey air tu sustain life.

Truly a wonderful sight, which we have often recalled during the past wiuter as we read of the great number of deaths from pneumonia and brenchitis. Nearly 200 deaths in Boston in the month of January.

It seems impossible to most people that ss common and simple a disexse as bren-| chitis should cause death at all. But think fora momeut, what would happen if the lining membrane of those tiny tubes de- scribed above should become much swollen by inflammation, which is likely to occur after any severe cold. The passage of air to the lung cells wou!d be stopped, and the patient die from suff cation as certainly as if a giant grasped his throat

People should not overlook the irritation or “tickling in the throat,” which causes a **hacking cough.” Sure symptoms of bron- chitis. The irritation being caused from inflammation inside of the wind-pipe, it is useless to take medicines into the stomach ts cure it; one might as well eat tallow to cure chapped hands.

The interior mucous membrane of the wind-pipe must be premptly treated, to prevent the downward spread of the inflim- mation, and effectacure.
