The Wrong Kind of Rape.

Srz,—Some of the seedamen of England have made a grave mistake in the rape seed which they sent to our seedsmen in the early part of the season. They have not sent it true to name; hence the larger por- tion of the rape groan during the present year in Ontario is a variety adapted co the preduction of seed for oil extraction, rather than to provide pasturage fur sheep The rape that has bssn grown in this coun- try during previous years is known as the ‘Dwarf Essex.” The order was given as usual for the *‘Dwari Essex” by our Guelph seedsmen. aud the package came labelled ‘Dwarf Essex,” whe-eas it is lanother var- ietY of rape which se2ms to be a hybrid. It is ssummer rape, while the ‘Dwarf Es- sex” is a winter varwty that will not pro- duce seed the same ssason, It is the same variety as rape grown at this station in a small plot which caiae to us labelled as che **Broad-leafed Dwarf Essex.”

1 do not regard it as being anything like so valuabie for pasture as the Dwarf Essex lt pushes up a flower stock about six t eight weeks after it is sown; hence it grow. less of leaf and much more of woody matter than the real Dwarf Essex. It yrows tall rather than spreading, in the form of a bush rather than that of a fodder plant; and at the present time the fields containing it are one mess of yellow bloom.

Letters have reached me from several directions expressing the fear that if the seed or a portion of it were allowed to fall upon the ground it would be troublesome to get rid of, and asking what had better be done with it inthe meantime, In the abeence of previous experience with this plant, I can only express an opinion on this poiat. Ido not aporhond that trouble would arise to any serious extent if seme of the seed should ripen and fall upon the ground, but it is better not to run any risk

Srz,—Your correspondent ‘‘Historicus” in Saturday's EXAMINER questions your author- ity for the statement made in THe EXAMINER of the 26th ult., touching the commemorative feature of the beoneent Exhibition recently held in that city. ‘‘Historicus” denies that Capt John Macdonald, Glenaladale, of the 84:h Highlanders, declined the governorship of this Island, because, as he states, no ‘‘auch offer was ever made.” In defence of the statement in question, the accuracy of which is challenged by your co: respondent, we refer him to a lecture “A (‘hapter in Our Island History,” delivered in the Merket Hall, Char- isttetown, during the winter of 1881, by the late Rev. Dr. D. Macdonald, familiarly known as “Father Dan,” than whom no better authority on the life and times of the early Highland emigrants of this Island could be given. In this sble lecture it is stated ‘“‘that in proof of the estimatioa in which Capt. John Macdonald, of Glenaladale. stood with the government of Great Britain it may be here meationed that the government of this Island was offered him, but as a consistent CUatholic he was obliged to decline, owing to the oa'h required to be taken at that time.”’ THIsTLe.
