The survey is being made by the mapping branch of the tedi- nical surveys department in winter because it's easier to travel over frozen surfaces. Summer travel is difficult be- cause of obstacles presen streams. rlven and lakes.

Mr. MacLellnn said the first 100 miles of the trip will be over relatively flat country but the last 200 miles will Involve scaling a 2.000-foot. plateau and crossing an area dotted with deep canyons down to sea level.

"We don't expect to be very comfortable." Mr. MacLellan said. "We'll average about five miles a day and won't stop un- less weather makes travelling lm ssible."
