Were it not for the Jews we would have no history of religion, as they preserved the Old Testament and in it we find characters that are the admiration and reverence of the world wether Jew or Greek. Is there any other nation that can produce a Moses or an Elijah, or a Christ? And yet these are Jews. By nature the Jews are musicians. In the time of their propheta of oli they worshipped God with timbre! and harp and in more modern times we have Mendels- sohn and Rossini, Mendelssohn’s father was a convert to Christianity and young Felix was brought up ia the Lutheran faith, yet he never forgot the religion of his fore- fathers. His character was even finer than his genius, What other nation has pro- duced such men ? In literature we have the Psalms, which are read and even sung as reverently in Prince Edward Island as they ever were. In the drama we have Rachael the great- est actress that ever came before the foot- lights, and even the great Sarah Bernhardt, and even in our own Mother country we ad israeli who in reply to the charge that he was a Jew: ‘Yes, 1 am a Jew,” and when your ancestors lived in a state of savagery in these Isles, my fathers were priests in the Temple. The total Jewish population, according to the latest statistics, is six millions three hundred thousand, 82 you see by that they are not the principal element in any coun- try. The Jew has ever been accused of trickery but the great Wendling asks: were you ever taken in by a Methodist minister in a horse trade, or a Presbyverian speculator, or an Episcopalian stock broker? The belief that the Jew is dishonest any more so than other pecple, is one-half nonsense and the other half prejudice. Io regard to the supression of Jews by the Czar it is im- possibie. Has’nt every nation on earth tried it and failed because the Jewa are God’s own people and have been for four thousand years, and the persecutions they have re- ceived stamps them as a people bearing mysterious relation to the plans of the eternal. It has long been a proverb that you never see a Jewish tramp, drunkard or beggar. There are fewer inmates of hospitals, jails and workhouses than any other race, and for this pened of their thrift they are persecuted to-

ay. Gielne has defined the type of shrewdness to be ‘A Jewish Yorkshire man of Scottish descent with a Yankee education.” The Jews resemble a block of rough granite which in its crude state is an unsightly mass, but under the chisel becomes a beautiful polished block. Just so the Jews have been under the hammer and fire of centuries; they have been enslaved, persecuted, starved and massacred by thousands, but like the granite they yet stand under each stroke more beautiful, more fitted for their place in the Divine temple.

Good breeding is good sense.

Bad manners in a woman are immorality.

Awkwardness may be ineradicable.

Bashfulness is constitutional.

Ignorance of etiquette is the result of circumstances.

Self-possessed, unshrinking and aggres- sive coarseness of demeanor may be reckon- ed as a state prison offense, aod certainly merits that mild form of restraint called imprisonment for life.

It is a shame for women to be lectured on their manners. It is a bitter shame that they need it. Do not be restrained ; carry yourself so loftily that men will look up to you for reward, not at you in rebuke.

The natural sentiment cf man towards woman is reverence. He loses a large means of grace when he is obliged to ac- count her a being to be trained in pro- priety.

A man’s ideal is not wounded when wo- man falls in worldly wisdom, but if in grace, in tact, in sentiment, in delicacy, in kindness she should be found wanting, he
