Gen. Grant’s Tomb.
General Grant’s tomb on the Hudson, is nightly guarded by asquad of solliers to prevent its being mfled. It is not kuown that any crime has been planned, but the theft of A. T. Stewart’s body and the at- tempt on Lincoln’s tomb on this continent, and the carrying away of the remains of Lord Crawford in Scotland, have shown the existence of a phase of villainy that renders it necessary to protect against rob- bery the resting place of any prominent man whore friends a thief might think would be willing to pay largely for the return of the body. The grave of Pr>si- dent Garfield, now dead nearly four years, is still watched, and that of Gen. Grant will probably need guarding for as long @ time.

The first shipment for Eagland of this year’s wheat was made from the North- West Territories on the 3rd inst. It was raised on the Canadian Pacific's experi- mental farms in the vicinity of Muple Creek, 600 miles west of Winnipeg. The Ogilvie Milling Company also sent its first direct shipment of flour to Great Britain on the same date from Wiunipeg. It is rather late in the day to raise a boom about summer frosts in the North-West when we find that the harvest is over and the wheat of this year’s crop on its way to market. Whether the flour was manufactured from wheat grown this year or not we cannot say.

Wanderers’ Amatbur Minstrels.
Tur Wanderers’ Amateur Minstrels’ en- tertainment at Academy of Music last }evening, was a pleasing and amusing affair | First-class arrangements were made by the management, and the minstrels were put on the stage in good style. The audience was large, sclect, and appreciative, and went away well pleased with the perform- ance, The choruses were sung in good taste, while the drama, ‘The Virginian Mummy” was well acted. Tom Wayo (Mr. Esson) who appeared to be the star of
mirably. Aitken (Mr. Henry), and Mr. Gardiner (Mr. Seeton), gave him worthy support, and the other performers sustained their parts splendidly. The orchestra, though small, was good, and played some choice selections during the evening. The man- agement deserve credit for producing so fine an amateur performance.

The op nion of the Board of Trade, re- specting this great national work is ex pressed as follows :
WHEREAS, means of communication between St. Lawrence, whereby products of the several Pr®Winces bordering thereon may be interchanged without encountering the dangerous navigation of the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, whereby steamers and sailing vessels, adapted as well for inland as for ocean navigation, may be safely conveyed across the Isthmus of Chignecto, with out the cost and delay of transhipment or break- ing bulk and whereby the sailing distance be- tween this port and all ports north and west of said Isthnius may be reduced about 600 miles would materially increase the volume of trade and benefit the shipping interests of this port and Other ports in the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of St. Lawrence ; and
** WHEREAS, by means of a ship railway across said Isthmus, the objects aforesaid may be accom- plished and thus stimulate the development of the agricultural, mining, lumbering and fishing re- sources of the district contiguous to the aforesaid parts ; and
“ WHEREAS, a company has been formed for the construction and operation of a ship railway, with commodious docks and hydraulic lifts for raising and transporting over its line laden ves- sels of 1,000 tons displacement; therefore
“RESOLVED, that this Board is of opinidn that the undertaking of said company would greatly facilitate trade and commerce between the eastern and western provinces; and further
** RESOLVED, that this Board cordially approves the project for building the said ship railway. believing that this is a movement which will commend itself to all classes, and prove to be of great convenience and benefit to our trade and commerce generally.”
