A novel method of plates is reported from Salt Lake City. ‘he city is being supplied with electric- ity for lighting and power generated fourteen miles away in the Big Cotton- vyood Canyon. It was found necessary, for the purpose of pipe connections, to eut four 48-inch openings in the 7-foot genstock, the plates of which were half an inch thick. Giadstone’s Story of an Old Tree.

Within a hundred yards of my win- dow stood a great beech, now victim of the gales. Some tiirty years ago an arm, 7 or8 feet from the ground, and about 60 feet long to the end of the twigs. was nearly torn from the trunk, I always reckoned that not less than four-fifths of the area which onaclean sawing would have been found to unite it to the were torn off; it held on by the remaining one- fifth; but nearly the whole weight of the arm was borne by the ground, on which there lay 12 or 15 feet of it, after some stumpy props had disappeared. It never took any sort of root, and the bark remained entire below above.

Under these circumstances the came regularly all along the arms for at least twenty-five years so well that it was not possible to distinguish be- tween it and the tree. I used to look our for signs of approaching failure, but could discern none, and the process might have continued, to all appear- ances, without change for a long time.

Oscar, my Newfoundland dog, once brought home from Edenmouth a wild duck’s nest full of eggs, which he hatched out. When he conceived that the nestlings were of an apt age he carried them tothe curling pond,whcre he superintended their education in swimming.
