The more the present scheme of building the Canada Pacific Railway is thought ever, the more it commends itself to the thinking publie of Ontario and Quebec.

The Government supperters, excepting two or three speculators in Manitoba lands, will vote squarely for the scheme. They invite discussion. The Hamilton members asked Mr. Blake to allow Sir Charles Tup- per to Speak at Blake's meeting in Hamul- ton. Mr. Bleke refused.

Sir Charles Tupper will hold meetings at Hamilton and Montreal.

Haythorne’s letter, in the Putrict, has been received here. By Island members and Senators it is considered weak, one- sided and untruthful. A reply is to be published in the Island papers.

The opinion of Island Meinbers and Senators is that Haythorne acts an unman part in trying to shirk his responsibility in what he calls ‘* entrapping the Island into Confederation, and selling the independent constitution enjoyed for a hundred years.” He himself, it 1s remarked, was willing to entrap the Islwnd,for twenty-eight thousand dollars a year less than the ‘better terms,” and it is well known that he pledged hiw- self to stop building the Island road,— and

Mr. Haythorne supported Mr. Macken- zie’s Act, which offered any company for building twenty-six hundred miles, ten thousand dollars in cash and twenty thou- sand acres per mile and a guarantee of four per cent on the sum expended over that total, including interest at Haythorne’s valuation for land—one hundred and forty millions. The present agreement, taking the same valuation,-will involve a total cost of one hundred and three millions, or Tupper’s valuation of land—seventy-eight willions.

The Island members say the country that is going to derive the benefit from the Road should pay for it out of lands and proceeds of lands, and not burden P. E. island tax-payers to pay for a share of the road.

The Syndicate states that steel rails and iren bridges will be used, and that they always understood the Union Pacific of 1873 to be the standard. There is a small petiti.n from a few of Cartwright’s friends against

Me. #. Hanserr Breer received from Wm. McKechnie, Esq.,late Superintendent of the FP. E. Island Railway, who is new in Emerson, Manitoba, a handsome pair oi prairie chickens, which were shot by Mr. Fred MeKechnie. The chickens in appear- ance resemble our Island partridge, but are much larger and heavier, They look quite fresh,falthough they have travelled, by pest, over 2,600 miles.

THERE is on exhibition at the Showroom o Mr; John Newson, a case of stuffed birds which deserves special notice. The work was done by Prof. Earle a shert time age. It is excellent, and shows that the Professor is not amere tyroin the art of bird-stufiing. The easc contains over twenty small rare birds, such as wood-cock, golden wood-pecker, blue jay, king-fisher, etc., all set up in such a man ner, as to set the observer thinking whether they are aliveernot. Anyonelwanting a good case of native birds should callfond see this one,

‘“Rirvg Son” Divison.—On the 17th inat., a new Division, ‘* Rising Sun,” No. 121, was instituted at South Freetown, by D. Rogers, Esq., G. W. 2? , with twenty-four charter members. A very pleasing, and in- deed hopeful feature of this, the first effort of the new G. W. P., is that no less than ten of the number are heads of families. The regular night of meeting is Tuesday.
