The shipping business appears to be rather brisk at present, and the wharves are presenting a lively appearance. On the 21st the brigt. Vesta, Claque, mas- ter, cleared for Martinique with 5,034 bushels white oats, 3,122 bushels black eats, 75 sheep, and 1,600 feet lumber, shipped by R. ‘T. Hloiman, Kisq. On the 26th, the brigt. Wilie,Casey master, sailed for Queenstown for orders, with oats. butter, and deals, shipped by her owner, Hon. John Lefurgey. The bark Lizzie Cameron, Cameron master, 18 Joading with oats at the Railway Wharf; bark John FI. Robertson, Me- Millan master, loading with oats at Queen’s Wharf, and the brig fanny, Philips, is also loading with oats at the Queen’s Wharf. Besides the abeve, there are two schooners leading with
otatees, viz., J. G. Huntington, and the Ellen May.
During the past week, the schr. J.@. Huntington, Cunnivgham master, ar- rived from Portsmeuth, N. H., witha cargo of apples ia bulk, which were disposed of rapidly at the vessel. The schr. Ellen May, Westhaven, alse brought a large quantity of apples.
The storm of Saturday, altheugh the waves washed completely ever the wharves, did net do much damage. The brigt. Vesta, bark Lizzie Cameron, brig Nancy, with a schooner from Arichat, were anchored during the storm near the new lightheuse. About 4 o'clock the schooner was driven ashore off Wel- lands Peiot, where she now lies within a few yards of the land.
In the Progress of last week we find the following under the heading of “ Bad and Good”: “‘We are proud to be in a position to congratulate Sum- merside upon the geod behaviour of the Congregation which assembled at the Methodist Church en Wednesday even- ing last, to witness the happy event re-| ferred to in another column. ‘ Honor to whem honor is due,’ and we hope to be able to chrenicle the same good cons duct on the part of ail who may gather teget lier on similar and other eccasiens in the future.” The conduct en this eceasion was, instead of being geod, as the editer of the Progress weuld en- deavr to make the readers of his paper believe, quite the contrary. In fact seme ef the townsfolk expressed their surprise at such a statement being made by the editor of the Progress. To give “hener to whom hoener is due,” is

Ths Town Council had under con- sideration of Menday last, the subject| ef providing a supply of water in case of fire. The tellowing resolution, | moved by Councillor Rogers and sec-; ended by Councillor McLeod, was} passed :
Resolved, That a committee of three be | appointed to make arrangements with a} competent mason to construct a tank of jthe| following dimensions: twenty feet square | and fourteen feet deep, to be properly built | with brick and cement, and properly cover- | ed, and to be in all respects constructed in| a workmanlike manner, to the satisfactiun | of the Town Council, or a competent person | by them appointed to inspect the same ; | the site to be selected by the commitiee pow named, and the work to be proceeded with immediately.
The committee are Messrs. D. Rogers, R. ©. MeLeod, and Jehn McKenzie, with the chairman, D, Montgomery.

A Bye-Law is to ve intreduced at the next meeting of the Town Council, for the prevention of cruelty to ani- mals. A law of this kind is badly

The question of a Market House for Summerside was brought up for diseus- sion at the meeting of the Council on Meniday night jast by Councillor Mc~ Arthar. A majority of the Town Coun- cil are in favor of a Market House, but as the question of water-supply in case of fire, was considered to be of guewttr importance, the matter was laid ever fer.a while. It was considered that the
