TERRIBLY SUDDEN DEATH.

The community was shocked this morn ing by the anneuncement of the sudde: death, at Londonderry, of Mr. James &. Morrew, of the firm of Cunard & Morrow andagent of Allan Line steamers at this

ort. ar. Morrow leit the city last evening with Sir Leonard Tilley, Sir A. Campbell, and Sir E. Kenny, to visit the Londonderry Iron mines, Shortly after arriving there he was taken suddenly ill, believed to be rbeumatism of the heart, and died in two hours.

Mr. Morrow was one of the mest honor- able and esteeme:| vitizens of Halifax. His word was his bond. He had for years taken part in evory religious, moral and philanthrophic ol fect.

He was a leading member of the Bruns- wick-street Methodist Church, and ex- President of the Y. M. C. A. He only re- cently returned from a visit to New Bruns- wick, where he spent some time on Y. M. ¢. A. business. He was agent of the Gen eral Mining Association.

His fearfully sudden death, at the age of 47 years, has cast a gloom over the entire city.

His body was brought to the city this evening. Funeral takes place Monday afternoon. :

The London correspondent of the Edin- burgh Scotsman says: ‘‘ Controversies be- tween England and France respecting French encroachments en west coast of Africa have been complicated by some high handed proceedings of French commandant on Meilicoure river. These vexatious acts are probably intended to worry England into ceding Gambia to France, an object which every French government for many years past has steadfastly pursued.”

A passen.er train on Indianapolis and §t. Louis Railroad, due here this morning fram St. Louis, was thrown from the track. Four coaches were ditched. Accident was caused by removal of rail. Conductor Geo. Morris was killed. No others were serious. ly injured. The place selected was four miles west or Terrehaute, a desolate local- ity where the road crossed a bridge over a deep ravine. It was evidently the intention of the wreckers to throw the entire train in to the the ravine. Fortunately this disas- ter was avoided though the car was on the brink of the ravine. The parties suspected of this crime are being searched for.

Too Mvucu Marrizp.— esterday, Rev. J. F. Betts, Methodist minister at Sussex, went to Truro to give evidence of a marriage cere- mony performed by him on Sth of November last between one J. H. McLeod, of Truro, and Flora Cribb, of North River, Onslow. After the marriage, McLeod and his wife went to Truro to live, where they have since re sided. Some time age a weman from Halifax made things unpleasant by claiming to be Mrs. McLeod Ne. l. Her story was so good that the authorities at Truro had McLeod arrested for bigamy. The examination takes place this morning. McLeod is an engine driver on the I. C. R.—Post. z

Acapemy or Music.—Last evening was set apart for a complimentary benefit to Harry Lindley, which several of our townsmen had tendered, but we regret to say the weather proved a too formidable adversary, as the house was not good, ‘This is to be regretted, as it was the best performance of the season, so far. The ‘‘ Rose of Killarney” is a purely legendary Irish drama, and is full of humour aud seng. Mr. L. J. Williams sang admir- ably, and gave ‘‘McCarthy’s Mare” to the delectation of all. Some of the songs did not accord with the leader, in fact there seemed to be adifference of opinion as regards key. The finale of the first act was the most uproar- ous scene of Irish fun we have witnessed. The piece will be repeated by desire this evening, and should draw a full . house, as it is worthy of patronage. The management offers strong attractions next week. Menday —‘‘Lady Audley’s Secret,” which is un- doubtely Miss Braddon’s most sensational work, and in which Mr, Claude appears as George Talboys. 'Tuesday—by desire— ‘‘Kast Lynne.” Wednesday —‘** Lord Lovel” and ‘* Naney Bell Burlesque,” in which a trained pony is intoduced. Gu Monday week we are promised the ‘*Two Orphans,” in elaborate style.

THe attendance at the Stipendiary Magis- trates Court this forenoon, both of prisoners and spectators, was unusually large and the offences ranged from simple cases of drunken ness to a serious assault case. ‘Two common drunks were first disposed of—one of the otfenders being discovered by the pelice, at one o'clock this morning, fast asleeep at the corner of Pownal and Kent Streets. Nexé followed two cases under the category of ‘drunk and driving disorderly” which were summarily disposed of. Then came the assault in which a boy named John McUabe led. John it appears, was following some other boys with whom he wanted to settle an old score, when a Mrs. Keenan followed him to see what he was about, whereupon John asked her an im- pudent question,and ungallantly cailed her an obscene name. Mrs. Keenan was the only appearance against him, and while ahe swore that John. used most obscene languge towards her, Jahn asserted that she ‘‘ commenced it” and was always at variance with her neighbors ! John was fined $1 or 4 days. Michael Purcel was next called for an assauit on Mrs. Keziah Brown, (colored from West End). Michaelit

appears on Thursday last, entered Mrs srown’s residence having with him a

bottle of liquer. He asked Mrs. Brown to partake of the ardent. She refused to do so, and he proceeded to knock her down atid pour the liquor down her throat. She re- sisted, and a noisy quarrel ensued, during which Mrs. Brown's daughter struck Purcell between the shoulders with an axe and tem- porarly disabled him, On recovering, Parceil followed Miss Brown and threatened to take her life. In his absenee Kesiah eseaped to the cellar, and thence to the house of Wm, Jackson, where she took refuge. Purcell,
