Now, girls, listen to me on this point. The tirst thing I would say to you this morning is watch as to your associa- tions. Don't you go with the girl that will say things you won’t say, and will do things you won’t do, and that will go to places you won't go. It you &s- sociate with that class it won’t be long before you'll be saying and doing those things and going to those places, l believe that the greatest blessings we can throw around us on the temporal side of life is good associates, those who are good in the best and truest sense of the word. If you will tell me who your associates are, then I can mighty near write your history in the futare of your life, and stand to-day and read your history io the light of your asso- ciations, 1 grant you this much ; there are a great many deceptive things in this life. You may take pow a dozen boys and stand them up ina line and tell that young lady to pick her ou: a husband from the twelve, and nine chances to one she’ll pick out the worst tellow in the crowd and take him as a matter of choice. You put a dude out here On the street-—1 mean a first-class dude, none of your shoddy ones—and stand him out on Michigan avenue and clear the street of the carriages, and then bring out the girls and say to them: ‘The first one that catches him may have him, and you will have the biggest race down the street that’s ever been seen in the city. It’s as- tonishing howa girl will take after and run down 4 spider-legged dude if he will have her after she catches dim. A Strong Argument.

A siroog argument in favor of ab- stinence from alcoholic liquors is pre- sented in the report of the London Provident Iasurance company, an in- stitution some forty years in existence, organized specially for ins uring the lives of those who are not drinkers, By a comparison of the experience of this and ordinary companies extending over sixteen years, it is claimed that the temperance organization has a margin in ite favor in the percentage of death losses of about 30 per cent. An analysis of the cause of death in these two clas- ses shows that among the drinkers there i3 a four-fold increase in deaths from diseases of the liver, a two-fold increase in those from kidney diseases, a marked increase in those from pneumonia and pleurisy, and a con- siderable increase in affections of the nervous system, besides the cases in which dissolution results from clearly traceable causes, such as aleobolism. This showing is conclusive, based as it ison practical experience extending

over a long period, and, so far as reasoning may go, should. convince

people that it is for their undoubted good to abstain totally from the use of alcoholic stimulants. On the other hand it isdeclared that dr inking (io moderation it is presumed) decreases the likelihood of death from diseases of the heart, asthma, bronchitis and con- gestion of the lunge, though this seems hard to beliave, and that it does decreuse the number of deaths from old age,

when the user has not succumbed to the other pitfails with which in his earlier

days it so plentifully bestrews his path.
