The shortest line between Ireland and Scotland was from Tor Head to the Mull of Cantyre, a distance of 13 miles, but the water there was 462 feet deep and the site unsuitable. Mr. Barton proposed to cross between Island Magee and Wigtonshire with a tunnel about 33 miles long, with 500 feet of water over- | The proposed line would leave the Northern Countries Railway at a point near Whitehead and pss out under the headland known as the Gobbins, enter Wigtonshire outside of Loch Ryan at Port- obello, and passing under Wiersbon Hill connect at Stranraer with an existing line of railway.

The heaviest gradient proposed is 1 in 75. In the Mont Cenis, St. Gothard and Arleburg tunnels the average is 1 in 40; the Mersey tunnel is still steeper, while the Severn hasa flatter gradient of 1 in 90. No fears are entertained of trouble from water entering the tunnel; and in this view Mr Barton is supported by Sir John Hawk- shaw, Sir Douglas Fox, Sir Benjamin Baker, and other eminent engineers. The proposed tunnel would have 150 feet of rock between the roof and the bed ef the sea. The rock is only 30 feet thick above the Mersey tunnel and 40 feet in the Severn.

As to cost, it is estimated that this would not be more than in long tunnels through mountains. Judging from past experience the cost here is put at $500 per lineal yard. The shafts, pumping plant, additional rail- ways, etc., are estimated at $3,305,000, and the total estimate, with 10 per cent. added for contingencies, is put at $40,000,000.

The time of construction is estimated at ten to twelve years. Mr. J. T. Barton, C, E.,; explained that a series of large ventilating fans placed at the pumping stations at each end, about 24 miles from each other, could be

The weather is again warm in Manitoba.

St, John, N. B., claims that the census

It is stated in financial circles that a syndicate has been formed in Rome which is to have at its disposal 100,000,000 lire, of which one-half has been already subscribed, for the purpose of sustainiug the price of Italian rentes. The resources of the syndicate will not be restricted by the amount pledged, for many large and strong institutions and bankers, as well as those not quite so strong, have formed as it were a committee of defence against foreign attacks on the rentes.

A young gentleman the other night found that his thread led under the bed, and he was forced to crawl under to disentangle it.—Chatham World.

The next session of the sovereign grand lodge will be held in St. Lou's, commene- ing Sept. 21, and continuing through the week. The representatives will go by the way of Washington, taking in the Luray cave on the way out, and returning via Chicago. The brethren at St. Louis are making great preparations for their distin- guished visitors. At this distance it looks as if the week would be a holiday one for the order in that great city.
