McLean, Scotch settlement, parish of Moncton, was drowned yesterday morning under peculiarly distressing circumstances. The chiid went out of the back door about 9 c'clock and some five minutes jater his mother going out to look for him found the body ina cask of water in the front yard. Life was quite extinct. 1t appears that the little fel- low had got to the top of the cask and fallen in. Mr. and Mrs. McLean will have the sympathy of a large number of friends. vnniielelil

The number of arrests for dcunkenness was 100.” The Transcript also states that at every Catholic church in the diocose of Portland a letter was read from Bishop Healy,on Sunday, June 8th, stating that the sacraments of the church would in the future not be admiais- tered to any person who engaged in liquor- selling on Sundays.

The Halifax-Bermuda Cable.
HALIFaAx, June 16,
The cable steamer Westmeath, which is to ] iy the cable between here and Bermuda, arrived here this morning. She left Ber- muda {on Thursd ‘y, and laid about ten miles of heavy cable to connect the othce at Hamilton with the cable hut at Castle Harbor. The bottom was found to be very smooth and soft. The shore end here will be landed at the lumber yard near the direct United States cable... The steam- er will commence laying in about a week, and will complete her work by the end of the month. The Westmeath left England on the 23rd of May.

Terrific Storm. CINCINNATI, June 16. _ Yesterday afternoon, a thunder-storm set in. One and ahalf inches of rain fell in less than an hour. The fire bells were kept constantly ringing by the electric bat- teries, and 3,700 fire alarm and_ telegraph wires were melted or otherwise killed. E4- ward Lanneham was washed into a sewer and drowned. The loss of property is heavy. The storm appears to have extend ed over a wide area. Eighteen houses were unroofed. In Covington, Bellevue, Day- ton, and Newport, Ky., railway tracks were washed out, bridges swept away and thousands of acres of wheat laid flat. siocnihenialitliaieia Quebec News. Quesec, June 16. Betore the House Bribery Committee of Investigation to-day, Lawyer Stevens counsel for the West End Company, stated that the company had given banquets tu the members of the Legislature, and had furnished carriages to them. but had paid no money legitimately. The company believed their methods to obtain the charter were not wrong.,

Terrible Gas Explosion.

A terrible gas explosion occurred at Hill Farm Mines, near Dunbar, at 10 o’clock this morning. Out of fifty miners working in the pit, but ten have thus far escaped. it is feared all the 40 still in the mines are either killed outright or have been suffocat- ed. Private despatches to H. C. Frick of this city, say 45 men were inthe mine, of whom 15 were rescued,
Stone Cutters on Strike.
LOWELL, June 16. The stone cutters who work in the yards on monuments and similar work are on strike for nine hours a day and increased wages. Two firms, it is reported, acceded to their wishes, but the rest do not.

Waciace Conresses,— Young Kobert N, Wallace, who, with Ignatius Lowitz, robbed his uncle, the editor of Wallace's Monthly of $52,000 in bonds and money a month ago, and who was brought back from Havana by detectives last week, has made a full confession of hiscrime. He claims that he was urged to commit the theft by Lowitz, who had previously succeeded in having him cash worthless checks to the amount of $250. This money came from the funds of the yncle for whom young Wallace was acting as cashier. Among other ventures they went into the book- making business at the races, dropping $2,500 in afew days. The two fled to Havana, where they were arrested. It is understood that about half the money has been recovered.
